You might look into using an account manager such as BOINCstats/BAM, that would allow you to make changes to the projects attached to the hosts you let out "into the wild". I do something similar for my parents' computers that I help maintain and manage, they have their own accounts under my team, and I can manage most BOINC things from the BAM web interface. I also have TeamViewer installed on the machines, and can do remote "tech support" when needed.

So I would like to propose that each new project in WCG should have a batch of workunits for people using their Computer only five minutes a day. This batch should contain special workunits with a time limit of not less than a year. In other words: Users should have one year of time to send them back to WCG. Contributing to any distributed computing project for 5 minutes a day is pointless really (that's about 0.347 % of the day). Have you considered leaving your PC/laptop/etc on for an hour or two every day for no other reason other than to help a worthy cause ?. I run my PC 24/7 whether I use it or not (to support BOINC and the World Community Grid). You don't need to go to that extreme, but honestly ... 5 minutes a day ? What's the point ? |

Hi lavaflow,
Thank you for the suggestion, we have forwarded to the management team for consideration. Tedi |

However, what you haven't shown is that they have failed to do what they said they would. What I'd like to see as progress is: 1. More projects 2. GPU apps for all projects 3. Android apps for all projects 4. Enough of this stupid nonsense of disallowing certain characters in one's name 5. Real BOINC integration 6. A forum that isn't hopelessly cluttered and shows who you are quoting (welcome to 2004 maybe?) I'd argue that at least the first 3 would come under the heading of "attract more users" and those 3 are the biggest concrete steps they should take. I only returned because they had a new project to crunch. Once I reach my modest goal, I'm back to NNT. An Android app on each project would have me crunching 24/7 on 10 or more cores. ![]() |

@ Steve Hawker
----------------------------------------1, 2, & 3 are outside of WCG's direct control. Project scientists come to WCG with a proposal, not the other way around. A more pro-active approach marketing WCG to the scientific community could be beneficial but that's for another thread. Regarding #3 porting a project to android appears to take considerable tech resources with limited returns. WCG Android I suppose allocating resources to satisfy #4 might appear somwhere on a "to do" list but it's hardly a priority. The forum, used by less than 1% of active members, is in need of a radical overhaul starting with the software. This has been discussed at length MVN Forum Software & Website redesign with no success: jhindo World Community Grid Admin Let me elaborate on why there are no imminent plans to upgrade the forum software.. As a relatively small development team, we have to *constantly* make tough decisions about where to focus our resources, and how to balance our time across several competing tasks and priorities. In last year's extensive member study, the forums did not come up as a main pain point. So while I don't deny that the software is outdated and could definitely be better, it doesn't seem to be a priority for most volunteers. |

5. Real BOINC integration 6. A forum that isn't hopelessly cluttered and shows who you are quoting (welcome to 2004 maybe?) Those would be my top-two priorities; bringing over some basic BOINC functionality is job one in my opinion. The inability to merge/delete hosts really gets to me when I'm trying to keep host stats cohesive. Also, I'd throw in better support for account managers. |

Hello everyone,
thank you very much to everybody who took the word in this thread. As some kind of summary of this tag I would like to say, that in my opinion, distributed computing is an invention, that has the same importance as html itself search machines or the computer itself. We should find out, who was the inventor. I tried, but it is not as easy as I thought. Was it Edsger W. Dijkstra? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edsger_W._Dijkstra) If we have found out who invented distributed computing (a mathematician???), I would propose that on the birthday of the inventor of distributed computing, Google could have a “doodle” on his search page consitting the letters www.worldcommunitygrid.org (being distributed computing for everyone) and something linked to the inventor, maybe a portrait of him? What about that? Distributed computing is a very important invention without doubt. All the best wishes and crunch on!! Martin Schnellinger |

This is in my experience one reason why we loose contributors:
Boinc is using too much of our computer resources. I tried it and it was using about 60 % of my micro processor's time (+ using the GPU) therefore my laptop was heating up and the fan was working hard to evacuate the heat, making a lot of noise all the time and therefore a lot of nuisance. I did not see any way in Boinc to set a lower load or priority in the use of the micro processor which is why I had no alternative other than uninstalling Boinc. If I had a possibility to set a work load at 20% for example and set t the use of my computer for the time I did not use it then I could have continue to contribute. But I did not see such setting in the program therefore I had to uninstall it completely, sorry! Give a hand to computers owner in setting the computer work load for WCG! |

You can set the CPU percentage from the page reached below
----------------------------------------My Contribution My Projects Device Manager Device Profiles then select the profile name (Default, Home, School or Work) Use no more than: xx % of processor time set 20 scroll down and save Home, School or Work are only listed if you set them up Paul.

This is in my experience one reason why we loose contributors: Boinc is using too much of our computer resources. Well, that's kind of the point. I tried it and it was using about 60 % of my micro processor's time (+ using the GPU) therefore my laptop was heating up and the fan was working hard to evacuate the heat, making a lot of noise all the time and therefore a lot of nuisance. If you're having heat or performance issues, there are a PLETHORA of options that you can use to tweak how your computer is used. If you can't find them yourself (can be set either on a projects' webpage to take effect on all or groups of hosts, or in the BOINC manager software for a single host) then there is plenty of documentation and assistance available in the forums. |
