Re: Eliminate one reason why members stop contributing

The problem is that the survey was flawed because no one from WCG bothered to ask us what should be included. It's like designing a poll. It has to be unbiased. If you only ask the questions you BELIEVE could be an issue rather than first trying to find out what things actually ARE and issue, then your poll or survey is destined to fail - which is exactly what happened here.

And this always how WCG has been run as far back as I can remember. Maybe in the very beginning the staff was more responsive and interested in the views of members but that doesn't seem to be true any more. If it were, we would have been asked for our input in designing the survey - but of course, we weren't.

I did however notice that the number of active users has increased pretty dramatically over the past week even though the rate at which new users are being added seems to be more or less constant if not declining. http://boincstats.com/en/stats/15/project/detail/user

That's encouraging and would be interested in knowing what might have led to that change but I very much doubt it has anything to do with changes to the website, which have been the focus of the survey results.

My guess would be that the addition of a new project has brought some people back who had previously become disenchanted with the lack of new work. If so, maybe that should be a clue to the staff as to the importance of trying to get the message of WCG out to researchers.

Bringing back a GPU project would result in an even greater spike in active users. And yet more than a year after the last such project ended there is nothing in sight.

We'll now see just how many people UGM is able to bring back to WCG and how long that renewed interest will last. But if that is indeed the reason for the recent resurgence, I hope the staff will take this lesson to heart and make more of an effort to bring in new and interesting work.

New project, New badge (but many here deny the desire for collecting them), and potentially some preparing for next months challenge by getting some testing in on what work will be best to run.

With the announcement of the challenge which was emailed and posted in BOINC Manager Notices, and social media, I would say they have been doing more than just their website... I would say they are trying to advertise more and starting by beginning the process of involving/appealing to more teams as was part of that link above as well.

Yes, i started living in full badge denial, and you can see so 24/7 wink

(would be nice to have an option on the forum profile to not show them in the sidebar).

And thanks for the tip off, looked in notices and see 3 new wcg messages. (the alerting has been switched off in boinctasks, looking when i feel like looking cool.

Re: Eliminate one reason why members stop contributing

Today's email on CEP2 contained this:

Help us spread the word

To celebrate our first decade of discovery and power the next one, we invite you to take part in a community-wide competition to recruit as many new volunteers as possible to World Community Grid.

There are some great prizes up for grabs. The 20 people who recruit the highest number of new volunteers by November 16 will win a limited-edition World Community Grid prize. The top 3 will also receive special additional awards.

The active members is slightly on the up since 8 days. Returners for you know what in amongst no doubt. If that tickles the fancy, great.

Reading this made me consider for a full second to set up my different machines under separate accounts, just for the duration of this "celebration" and to get recruiterstatus without real effort.

I'll skip on it because it is
- cheating, really, and
- too much work to implement in comparison with the reward I might get

If someone feels different about one of the two reasons mentioned above, then it might show in the general WCG stats by an increased number of new active members, offset by status quo in total processing power. This is, I think, the main problem I see with any "recruiting rewards". There are those who will play the game as it should be played, and there will be others.

Chances are real that cheaters will make it to the top-20, and even to the top-3. Rewards for cheating? Hmmmm.

Re: Eliminate one reason why members stop contributing

Have noted the corruptibility regarding the recruiting badging elsewhere, hoping admins figure out ip localizations of the not too many prize contenders. E.g. anything over anonymized nets like tor is not considered. After all, those who'd not want to be known should remain not to be known in full privacy respecting. smile

Re: Eliminate one reason why members stop contributing

... figure out ip localizations of the ...

This is a hard one.

What about somebody who finally convinces his 2000 (just to give a bumber) colleagues in his company to set this up on their company desktop computers? Or the wife/husband/children? Compared to one who pretends this is what happening, without the colleagues/wife/husband/children knowing?

IP localisation just doesn't do. It can give an indication, but by far can not be relied upon to make the correct decision. Raw manpower to check every new member, combined with lie detectors and homevisits will not even do.

wink

Not claiming to have a solution though. Except for dna registration.

People will cheat, of feel cheated. And some are bound to be unhappy and maybe leave if they feel too bad about it. Does it compensate for the gain? This is for others to decide.

Re: Eliminate one reason why members stop contributing

Greetings,
I do not know how many others have done this but, As my wife and children's desk tops shelled out, the new rebuilds were all put under my user name. Any grand kids or great grand kids that want me to set them up will also be under my user name, as I am the only person of the lot to have time to farm them.
The user names shown abandoned are actually running full bore, but not listed. The new ones will not be listed, so no mention of enlistment.
An impossible situation to monitor, by any one other than us.
Cheers To All.

Re: Eliminate one reason why members stop contributing

You could have created your own team and registered all the agents of the children/grands/great-grands to their own name and use the team function as roll-up, albeit, there's no team project contribution badges faik. A void, to those who care about showing badges. Personally, i'd use the same badges for teams, same levels. This way a group of small contributors could still collaborate to achieve higher badge levels.

Are you reading up there in the administration department?
