Moving this here (hit diamond on HSTB the other day) as I don't want to "hijack" the project badge thread:
----------------------------------------The availability has been much better over the past 2-3 months. I currently have 410 WUs queued or running on my machines and all but 103 are HSTB. I think I saw mention in the past that HSTB WUs are "generational" - completed WUs result in more new WUs. If that is correct, the more HSTB that get crunched, the more there will be to crunch. That also fits with the long term trend I've seen - WU have become increasingly available as time has past. Two and a half months ago, I had a bit over two years for HSTB. Lately, I have actually had a number of occasions where the only work I had on my machines was HSTB. I have never used the BOINCCMD approach - the trend it was for was one I did not see on my machines. Having HSTB as one of multiple projects selected in your profile does not get near as many WU as having it as the only one. Crunching all the time with just HSTB selected will mean you will have idle machines at some time....eventually. Avoiding having idle machines is not really that hard or time consuming. I use BOINCTasks to manage all my machines from one single machine rather that have to go to BOINCMgr on each one. This makes things much more efficient. Set up two profiles. The first one has just HSTB selected with no work from other projects if no HSTB is available. Set the work queue to a large value that is not more than half of the normal deadline (10 days). I usually have this set to four days and currently have about half of my machines at this limit with just HSTB work. Depending on the characteristics of your crunchers, you may need to use a different value. Higher end machines crunch faster and could hit the per core limit before the queue time limit (less likely since the cloud move with the higher per core limit) so it's kind of pointless to ask for more work than the per core limit allows. The second profile has HSTB and other projects selected with the work queue set to one half of what you set in the first profile. Run with the first profile assigned to all of your machines. When you have machines with work queued that is less than the amount set in the second profile, switch those machines to the second profile. Once they fill back up with enough work to reach the queue size set in the second profile, switch them back to the first profile. This usually is no more than 15-20 minutes (you can spend that time checking the forums and your stats - or whatever). With these machines switched back to the first profile, they will have enough work to not run dry (two days worth in my case) but will continue to ask for HSTB only now that they are back on the first profile. That is better than using the same queue size as they would have to work that down enough to start asking for HSTB again. To get HSTB work, you want your machines taking the "are we there yet" approach - the more often they ask for it, the better the odds they will get some. Yes, this means taking a few minutes to check on your machines every other day (or perhaps each day if you have smaller queue sizes) but if you aren't going to be able to do that for a few days, just switch your machines to the second profile until you can. They won't run out of work and will still have some chance of getting HSTB in the meantime. |

Why does it need to be so complicated ? Are the projects within WCG priotized ? I get only HSTB when single project in profile; then also the validation takes long.

Why does it need to be so complicated ? Are the projects within WCG priotized ? I get only HSTB when single project in profile; then also the validation takes long. It is not complicated. There are only about 5,000 to 7,000 work units available each day. There are probably 10,000 crunchers with 20,000 machines and 30,000 threads all attempting to get some of those units. Obviously there are not enough to go around. Hence, unless you use some babysitting or special procedures to trap some of these elusive units, you will get very few to none. As far as the validation goes, this comes as a result of some people being able to maintain substantial queues, their unit gets done close to the 10 day deadline whereas you finished your unit in a day or two. As long as your unit is fine, it will get validated eventually. The gratification you seek with a quick validation may be delayed. Cheers

Getting HSTB work? Easy, just select it as your only project. Keeping your machines from not having enough work and ending up idle for some amount of time? Easy, don't crunch HSTB. Doing both? Not easy but not complicated. It does take some time and effort though. Overall, it is MUCH better than 5-6 months ago, at least in terms of the amount of HSTB work we can get.

Given the limited WU and that we are at 69%, is there any idea of the remaining time for this project?

Look at the WCG Calculated end date : Today it is : 2017-12-23 That, unfortunately, is one of the flaws in how WCG calculates its end-date, it uses the recent flow rate in its calculations, rather than the number of WUs left. ![]() |

Thank you, this is useful. :) The recent flow rate in the calculation will work for me, as I can back in my time to targets.
