To move up those 3 ultra units by 80 generations to catch up the last of the other extremes I believe would require the equivalent of a USB flash drive, so not much. Shoutouts to those Kingston NV2 1TB m.2 drives that are dirty cheap right now... ![]() Want to have an image of yourself like this on? You are all close to the origins of my question. I was trying to calculate cost of storage for the remainder of the project. I was looking at Amazon and you can buy a 10TB drive for RAID at under $200.
----------------------------------------Work Units remaining 1599403 Results per Work Unit 2 Total Results remaining 3198806 Result storage size (MB) 120 Results stored per 10 TB drive 83000 Drives required 40 Cost per 10 TB Drive $ 200 total cost (one location) $ 8000 Backup location $ 8000 Total storage costs $ 16000 50% contingency $ 8000 Total funds needed $ 24000 * This assumes you need to store both the primary and wing man results. I am not sure why you would need to save both long term once the unit is validated. If only one is needed the cost is cut in half. * Contingency includes things like a rack and drawers for the data center to house the storage. Also a few cables. * Educational institutions should be able to get a significant cost reduction on equipment rather than the quantity of 1 price on Amazon. Please feel free to tell me if I have made a math mistake somewhere above. Did I mention that someone in Africa dies of malnutrition every 48 seconds? That is 1800 people a day. Net: I don't believe the lack of $24,000 in funding is the issue. It may be AN issue, but my guess is it is a minor one. There is something else going on here. I am a project manager by trade. I would love to see the Gantt charts for this project, the financial plan, and the checkpoints for go/no-go decisions. I find it hard to believe that $24,000 can't be funded through go-fund-me. I find it hard to believe a major university doesn't have access to potential funding sources for $24,000 I was reading last night that USAID spent $1.8B in humanitarian aid in Ethiopia alone last year. (Thank you USA and the American people.) And I am to believe there is no funding somewhere in the developed world for $24,000??? No, there is something else going on here that someone is keeping from the WCG volunteer community. We have donated about 200 million computer hours to this project so far. We are true stakeholders! I think we deserve an update from Delft. That is not a rosy sales pitch type of update I am looking for. How about a webinar where we can all get an update and ask questions. Do they have anyone on this project with formal project management training? Did I tell you that someone in Africa dies of malnutrition every 48 seconds? That is 25,000 people in the last 2 weeks. Oh yea, I almost forgot. Did I tell you I am frustrated with this project? Paul ![]() |

Your math is correct, I think you are very close to cost but some line items are missing: (this all based on the need for hardware)
----------------------------------------2 sets to hardware for the storage server ( 1 for on site, 1 for off site). Ball park price $3,500.00 each. Cables $200.00 (As you noted) Man hour(s) to setup/install/integrate/test - again ball park $700.00. And the best of all $200.00 for oh sh** I did it wrong. With the cost you came up with, we/they will need to add $4,600 to the cost over all. Also this is based on having rack space, at both locations. I am sure there are other small cost. Respectively, Cowtipper ![]() |

I like the figures, but there should be no need.
Delft are supposed to have their new storage but haven't got around to install it yet. If they do, there should be no need for Krembil to get more storage, especially as it might not be needed for another project. This is really down to Delft. I wouldn't want Krembil to waste their money on items which might be redundant. A few words from Delft as to the situation would be very welcome. Meanwhile, it would be nice for Krembil to advance those 3 ultras 80 generations to catch up the other extremes. That would need very little storage. Mike |

Go Mike! It seems the question of constipation vs diarrhea has again been raised.
It is difficult to recruit new members, or encourage former members to return, when we are not supporting TB and African Rainfall projects. It seems the inaction is with the projects and not with WCG. It seems that TB needs to be made inactive and replaced. |

we were promised new future projects when the transition was announced. two years later, we heard nothing of new projects.

You need to prove a thriving community and stable system to attract new projects and money.
You need money, stable system and projects to attract a community. The only position they have hired to our knowledge is a PR intern. Considering the lack of communication from PR person to us on the boards, I'm guessing the PR person is to work on new projects/money side of things, and isn't really for us. |

When IBM were running things, they had a monthly call to each project and reported on to us what had been said.
Could this be reinstated please? Mike |
