Got 167 WUs on linux in the latest 34 batch. So far 140 valid, 12 in PV, and 15 still in progress. No invalids or other problems.
----------------------------------------Updated tally now that all WUs have processed: 159 valid, 8 in PV, and still no invalids or other problems. [Edit 2 times, last edit by pvh513 at May 13, 2020 6:02:52 PM] |

I might be hallucinating this, but the BOINC Manager was unresponsive after exiting the BOINC screensaver.
----------------------------------------BOINC 7.16.5 x64 Windows 10 Pro 1809 x64 One of the recent OPN1 betas (batch 34?)... Possible Steps to Reproduce: 1. Ensure BOINC Manager active and visible on screen... wait x minutes for screensaver to activate. 2. Move mouse / enter Windows password 3. BOINC Manager is frozen. 4. Right click on taskbar -> Close Window (don't exit, just close to system tray) 5. Double-click on BOINC Manager in System Tray. 6. Everything works again. I might have hallucinated this, so don't spend too much time. If I get any more OPN1 work units, I'll try to re-create this freeze condition.

FWIW screensavers burn cpu cycles and adds to the time it takes complete tasks.

No idea because I haven't used one in years. It may not seem like much but it does add up over time. My display is set to shut off after 1 minute of being idle.

Out of curiosity do you have any idea how much longer it adds to a task runtime (looking at the screensaver)? You can easily identify the impact of the "wasted CPU resources" using BoincTasks. This tool reports in real time the both times: elapsed time "wall clock" vs effective CPU time. For Linux-based WCG only machines without active screensaver (i.e. all my machines are set to blank the screen by no active use) crunching standard project (no MIP1), the CPU efficiency should be at 99% or higher (on my machines: > 99.8 %). For Windows-based WCG only machines with blank screen as screensaver, it could be a little bit lower (currently on my Windows 7 x64 machine: > 97 %). By the way, I notice a significant performance decrease since the last Boinc update. With the older Boinc version, the Windows-based machine was at 99%, with the 7.14.3 version, it is about 97% sometime only 96%. This observation is reproducible on all standard project (excepted MIP1 which is worst because of memory caching troubles). On my lone remaining Linux server many times the CPU time will be higher than the elapsed time. Have no idea why other than it might be some type of bug in the BT software. Never does that on the windoze boxes. By the way, I notice a significant performance decrease since the last Boinc update. A 2-3% performance drop would not be acceptable for me.

Cheers, Yves Very likely nothing to do with the client and everything with the OS and auxiliary configuration. Same science apps as before, but if you can demonstrate the client(traffic manager) itself is eating that 3% percent I'm all ears. Anyway running 7.14.2 and the nightly hands-off shows 99.3% efficiency or thereabouts. BTW, the ballpark screensaver usage is 2-5% if it got moving elements. Odd isn't it, when it's running on the GPU. Think the cost is in the RPC traffic between science and gpu app. Oh, BOINCTasks, BOINC Manager eat CPU time too, which is why I run them closed, BM is not even loaded. |

Lavaflow,
----------------------------------------the only changed configuration item on the machine is Boinc. I've observed the difference before/after. I am surprised as well and I have no explanation for the current situation. I agree that it is relatively strange, especially because Boinc is not doing much. Cheers, Yves |
