Re: OpenPandemics GPU Beta Test - March 26 2021 [ Issues Thread ]

OK....I won't be surprised if it fails then.
I know I was told that the OP cpu app would not work on XP.

The CPU apps can be patched to run on XP so the GPU app may also.
Search here for PEInfo for details.

shock I am surprised and a bit worried when I hear that BOINC is apparently not protected against running modified binaries.

May I ask exactly what GPU you have - intel_gpu, that is: the NVidia cards are all working fine here.

This machine has an i5-4690 CPU with HD 4600, reporting 1298MB available, and it fails all the tasks. The Grumpy Swede has a i7-4790K CPU with HD 4600, reporting 1400MB available, and his works with the same driver. I'm trying to work out where the difference lies.

I have similar problem with Intel UHD Graphics 630 GPU on Win 10 PRO, i5-10400 CPU.
Running in "1CPU + 1 GPU" mode and I see some WUs running fine from start to finish and others being reported by Boinc as running but there is no GPU activity for long period of time (1hr or more). For those hanging I do Suspend / Resume and it brings GPU back to life (sometimes I have to do this 2, 3 times for one WU). So this is not "ideal" model for daily operation because the hanging WU will block the others GPU WUs from running.

The only change is to the header of the executable that says what version it needs as a minimum.
As it is compiled on a later version that is what is demanded but it does work on earlier versions.

It's protected against someone else modifying the binaries. The files BOINC sends you are digitally signed.

You are, however free to run your own binaries in place of the project's binaries, if the project allows it, and most projects do permit this. It allows people with non-standard platforms to run the project, and it allows people to run experimental, optimized apps (which often lead to the project utilizing the optimized apps for everyone.)

tl;dr: It's a feature, not a bug.

I do not agree here. With the original binaries being signed, BOINC can detect that the code it's going to execute wasn't sent by the project. No more and no less. There's no possibility to tell how and by whom it was modified. I would expect that BOINC simply refuses to proceed in that situation. But apparently the signature is not verified. Maybe once on initial download but not after that.

In this case you'll either have no signature at all or the binary is self-signed with a valid signature. In the other case you have a signature which is clearly invalid but not checked.

tl;dr: It's a feature, not a bug.
IMO it's a surprising and arguably unreasonable feature, very close to a bug.

If it allows someone with older equipment to keep contributing to WCG, no harm no foul. JMHO.

There is some server side protection with the use of replication=2 to verify result. Any modified or wrong data becomes invalid. Modified binary or data can modify the results which can have invalid result. Faulty RAM can also cause invalid data, I had to replace DDR3 RAM on my old AMD FX 4100 computer to fix my random invalid results.

Edit: To add, I guess modification which doesn't change to results data is probably ok. BOINC is open source so anything is possible at the client side.

Now I see one invalid (this is new - I've never seen this before):

I realized that McAfee is active on this computer - so maybe this is interfering with Boinc GPU WUs. However I've never had any issues with Boinc CPU WUs on this computer.
