Re: 2022-08-26 Update (increased WU output & WCG backend changes)

I try to stay positive. After all, this is volunteer work. I don't have to participate if I don't feel like it. Most of my machines are shut down with just a skeleton crew running, just to stay abreast of any developments. If I run out of WCG items I let a few Denis units in. I do agree this whole transition could have and should have gone a whale of a lot smoother. I feel bad that the scientists are not getting the throughput they should be getting. I am also seriously disappointed with the communication issue. They should be doing so much better. But, when they finally do get up and running full speed, I will still be here participating in the projects which I deem worthy of my computers' time and my pocketbook for electricity.
Once things are back to full speed, I would like the scientists to at least acknowledge the contribution of the volunteers, not so much for me, but for those who periodically need a pat on the back for their participation.
Cheers

Re: 2022-08-26 Update (increased WU output & WCG backend changes)

It's hard to stay positive when problems appear to be fixed and then start happening again.

I don't get why the download problem hasn't been resolved yet. It's been happening for several weeks.

If ARP is causing downloads to fail it should be turned off until a better solution is developed. Or moved to dedicated infrastructure to avoid impacting the rest of the projects.

If it's lack of technical resources then Krembil is in big trouble. The way things are going WCG will never scale to the levels before the transition. I think I saw a post from Cyclops saying they were allocating Test/QA servers to Production. What is the point of "live" testing when the Prod infrastructure is not fully built out? Maybe the Prod environment is close to being ready to go. Hard to tell with the lack of communication.

It's strange there's been no posts from the former IBM team. I would think they would be available to help out since they are volunteers now. IBM must have put a gag order on them.

It's obvious Krembil is over their heads. They probably had no choice to take ownership of WCG since MCM is one of their major projects.

wildhagen:
We are 6.5 months into the migration now, and it seems not even the most basic of issues is even remotely solved.

What, according to you, is the most basic of issues?
Old, previously fixed issues are reappearing etc.

If you mean the networking issue, this wasn't fixed. It seemed like it was fixed, but that was only the result of halting distributing new ARP1-workunits. As soon as distribution of new ARP-work started again, the networking issue reappeared.

So that was an issue that hasn't been fixed. You speak of issues that were previously fixed. Which other issues can you name that were previously fixed? Can you name one?

Re: 2022-08-26 Update (increased WU output & WCG backend changes)

This is like being in a verbally abusive relationship where the victim keeps telling themself that things will get better and the abuse will stop. But things rarely get better and it usually doesn't stop.

I had decided back in February that it was unlikely I'd return to WCG. A two month outage does not inspire confidence in their ability to competently operate the platform. A two week outage would have been concerning. Now we are over six months in with disappointingly little progress and their communication is still very infrequent and not very forthcoming. This is inexcusable.

I'm still waiting for an explanation as to why Krembil didn't start building their system a year ago after the migration away from IBM was first announced. The new Krembil system could have been built and internally tested while IBM continued to host WCG. Then when ready, IBM could suspend operations and the latest data could have been copied over and the new system could cut over and go live for external testing.

I was only a few years of runtime away from earning my 50 year MCM badge. It's disappointing I will never be able to finish that off unless Krembil turns WCG over to someone with the resources to properly operate it. But there are plenty of other projects to donate computing power to.

Re: 2022-08-26 Update (increased WU output & WCG backend changes)

Am I the only one getting a continuous stream of WUs? I have opted out of ARP so I can't comment on that. After a brief hiccup the downloading seems to be back to normal again and other than the Results problem everything appears fine.

Work done is definitively being registered and this can be seen in WCG Statistics (two along from Tasks). My User Total has gone up from 15,430,000 on 07 July to 15,545,000 today but I've no idea what these numbers represent - can anyone tell me? . I'm hoping that these figures can be translated into Points at some time when the whole thing is running normally again.

I've been getting continuous WUs for over a week now, from OPN, ARP, and MCM.

Re: 2022-08-26 Update (increased WU output & WCG backend changes)

Today I have had re-sends only, mostly from "No-Relpy", no new units.
Probably the same since about the 3rd.

WUProp shows lower numbers than recently, very low for OPNG.

Re: 2022-08-26 Update (increased WU output & WCG backend changes)

No you are not. Well not really continuous but enough to try cutting off other projects. It worked for a while then one morning one machine had run out so I turned the others on again.

I cheat a bit and micro manage by clicking the update button 2 or 3 times a day. Maybe it's luck I guess. If there are WUs when I update then I get them and others are SOL.

My WCG stats at boincstats show 12008, 165528, 226539 credits for daily, weekly, monthly respectively.

For the others: Join up to TN-Grid while you wait. Look at my stats for projects.
Since February I have accumulated half as many credits as my total WCG.

My WCG stats are a bit misleading. My first year since April 2020 was with PCs from the junk closet. Then I converted one to a Ryzen 9 and it took off and 9 months later converted another to a Ryzen when I saw how much fun that was.

My TN-Grid stats are with these two Ryzens
