Re: Minnesota Crunchers

a while back newegg had an atx mobo that would take dual nehalem xeons with regular ram etc.

do not remember who it was but it was tempting at the time to try to build a very powerful server on the cheap.

with a bios update down the road you may be able to upgrade to the hexacores when they are affordable... confused

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I see a few board makers are updating the bios on the 1366 socket boards to accept the 6 core chips. Prices hover around 4 to 5 hundred bucks for a good one. I just hope intel drops the prices to at least around 800 or less for a 2.5ghz 6 shooter. Otherwise will go dual quad westmere so I can swap later. Just the though of 24 wu's crunching at a time gets me wanting these bad boys. biggrin

Been a wild week. Hope I can get back to normal. Sometimes it seems the more you work, the farther behind you get. Hope all are enjoying the spring weather.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Hello,

been quite busy here also, lost my job, flip some burgers and hopefully found job that bring smile back to my face...

I really lost my dream job.
It did not come out of bushes, I was some how repaired that this could actully happen.
When Nordic was subordinate to British, I did receive back up person from UK, when I check from HR -matrix, this fellow did have status of team leader, so there probably was something like dozen fellows under my back up.
Nordic was quite identical with UK by numbers, so I did have quite clear vision how much work they did have there. Nordic was enough to employ me, so UK and Nordic together did create work quite much for two person, but we probably did have more than dozen white collars, and there was not Nordic any more, there was just UK.

So I was somehow repaired that when they start cut labors, they do not began from those fellows who they see every day.
I was just some person on edge of world, and quite expensive.. I think my running cost was twice bigger than my counterpart's on UK.

Those were so beautiful years, on our last telco with my darling Swedish colleges, I was not only one who's voice broke down....
C'est La Vie...

Well, economic sityation here is worst since great famine, litteraly this contry has not face anything like this even on WW2 or WW1.
So I was without job and there was not much options available, so I did went to this one Finnish company. That company has something like heroic epic reputation here, but if I would have any choice I would not never/ever went there, I simply have too bad experience about manage by perkele.
But there simply was not choice, and here it is very easy to get another job if aplying from another job, but quite hard to get job if applying from unemployment status.
So I did put my head down and walk through those gates where you need to throw almost every piece of hope.

Work there couple of months and my image by how horrible place Finnish companies actually are, did just get some consolidation.

Here we generally have two level of contract, standard white collar and higher white collar.
When working on standard, there is relatively low wage with overtime compensations, high protection, etc...
When working with higher, there is very good salary without any frigid time window when to work or any kind of protection, like term of notice or so on.

Every people that I meet, did have sign standard contract, but they all have upgrade it to higher by them self.
With this I mean that they really start work very long days without any compensation, so they really did grave yard hours free of charge.
No one has ever order them to act like this, or even ask. They have just start to give up with high volume of workload, they have give something like half hour extra work on first year and one hour on second and now they all seems to work something like 9½ hours per day, when only get payd by 7½h. Some of them work more like 12h days with salary of 7½, and that 7½ is on low scale.

I did not, I was offered standard contract and I was very happy with that.
So when my day was done, I just left, went home.
Very soon I did have some problems with this, another members from work community start to treed me like stowaway.
So they did not work long days because personal ambition or something like to try safe something, they all have just been cracked down by group pressure.
So this was not anything like peak load or something, they have just voluntary sign lower contract with very kräppy salary and by themselves upgrade it to higher one about working hours.

I did let them understand that I really do not care if they do free work for company that happens to have invest grade rating, it is fine for me.
But they cannot order me to do free overtime because they have acquiesce to do so.
If I have more work than can handle on 7½ hours and company is not willing to pay salary from overtime, then those work never get done. If someone want to do those without salary as overtime, fine for me, but nobody cannot demant with that base that has obey to act like this on their own life.

But I really know now, why there is very huge ICT companies on Finland. They get engineers with very low salary and those will work huge amout overwork without any compensation b.a.u.
I hope I have now flip my burgers for rest of my life.

Well, there was one job available on foreign bank and I did send application for there.
I did not hear any word from there, but then on one afternoon my current boss start to chat with me like: "so you are switching job"....
I start to ask how to h*ll he should know anything about it, and he told me that there has been lot of emails where he has been on cc-field.
He was not disappointed or anything, he told that he do not want to keep anybody against there will and he really respect this kind of ambition. He also told me that they will call me on next day and tell and I have receive job....

I will smile one day again, I will..

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Sorry to hear about your job loss. Seems the world is going down the toilet real fast. The big wigs keep there job and great pay but the hard workers who keep the company going gets screwed more and more. It's hard to say what the future holds for most of use. Hopefully the world economy will survive and good paying jobs come back. Until then, keep your head up and take it one day at a time.

Ja, that is no fun to lose one's job. Has not happened to me for a very long time (thankfully). Sincerely hope you find that job that brings huge smile to your face and to your wallet. biggrin

Here to the word is efficiency. They are always trying to squeeze more work into fewer hours with fewer people. Makes the bottom line look better, but at what cost to the workers ? Part of what I do is schedule workers for their shifts. I always need to keep in mind that the work life is not everything, workers need to be with their families and friends and especially their children. Balance, it needs balance.

Cheers

It seems to me that this is here on several layer, and only most bottom one and highest create direct interface, everything on middle is not....

Eksappeli:
When I was (still two more days) working on ground level on that evil -company, my own boss always did told me to keep overtimes as free days.
There was couple of cases, when I was not able to leave job simply because it would be inhuman act to somebody who really did need my help, so I did stay up to night.
I did not get paid from those longer days, but my boss told me to skip a day when change.

So couple of steps up from ground level, there is not any kind of will to take everything out of crew.
But on very top, where they create doctrine, there is.

This will from top, will get reply only from bottom, and I think they know that.

I notice that only persons, who expect me to work free of charge longer days, were with me on ground level.
I really did so, when there was a matter a saving something that was not caused by bad leading.
But on this case long days were absolutely "status quo" and everybody was except to accept this as silent rule, because another vice you would increase another workers workload.
Well I'm not poorest fellow on my county, do not have mortgages, running heavily on surplus, so this kind of attempt to broke me with group pressure did not work on my case..

Just wonder how long they will go....
Maybe on future we have same kind of strikes as on Japan...
You know, they wear sleeve badge that says: "I'm on strike" and continue work as normal.
I would not be so very surprised if that is common matter here on next decay..... I really would not be surprised at all...

Well, after I send my application to bank, I did receive mail were contact person told me that they have count me as applicant.
I did not hear anything after that, afterward I hear that they have done lot interviewing through my current boss, which I thing is somehow odd....
But hey, I did get the job biggrin
