Re: Minnesota Crunchers

This is amazing. First of all I do always have my macbook raised and I do have smcFanControl running to monitor the temp and set the fan speed. The fan speed was set to 6200 rpm's when I ran handbreak and the temps were in the 200's.

So, here is what I did. I opened it up and was going to see if it was dusty or something. Being less than a year old I figured it could not be that dusty, and it was not. But right on the leading edge of the CPU fan blades (about 20 of them) there was a micro fine layer of dust. I took a can of air a blew it off. I thought to myself there is no way that would help. It was such a minute amount. I put it all back together and this fricken laptop is running both cores at 100% and I can't get it above 140 F. That's 50 F cooler!!!
The dust on the edge of the blades were enough to cause it not to catch air, or something. I'm so happy. smile I'm going to open this thing up more often. I suggest you all do the same if you have a laptop. good luck coffee peace hugs applause
Did I mention I'm really happy right now?

I've never had issues with dust on fan blades, but a thin layer of dust on the heatsink that the fan is blowing air across will cause your temps to skyrocket. I'm guessing that's what helped you so much. The dust is like a layer of insulation that keeps the heatsink and CPU hot and prevents the moving air from carrying the heat away.

My older machines with an older Zallman fan and no case air filters would get dust all over each fin on the HSF. Zallman HSFs have a huge number of very thin copper fins that attract dust and are a PITA to clean out. I've seen temps drop 20-30C after a good cleaning.

I've finally retired those old machines though and the newer ones all have good air filtration on the cases so they stay much cleaner. The newer Zallman HSFs are only slightly easier to clean so I'm glad I rarely have to.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Hello fellows biggrin

Some banking stuff...
Half years I wrote about one Estonia bank, that paper is running to it maturity and there is not anymore really anything to gain on Baltic.

I think I can now write name of that bank, it is Balti Investeeringute Grupi.
They still have some offers, but they do not accept new deposit from Finnish by fax anymore, simply because they did open branch office on Helsinki....
So if I want high yield, I need to travel physically to Baltic and sign papers there....

Here on Finland they offer 3,00 <-> 3,20 for year.
On Estonia 3,50 <-> 3,70 for year.
On Lativa 4,00 <-> 4,2 for year.

Well, there is lot banks on Baltia, but I just do not want to take to much risk if there is not anything to win...
Maybe Nordic bankers were right after all, maybe those Baltic bankers are not so great after all. It seems to me that they still have this CCCP thinking, buildings will create authority to serviles, yeah we have great offices so we do not need to pay interest equal our credit rating......
When they start here on Finland, they offered 2,5% for years... It is very weird on that matter that credit rating of that bank is pure high yield.

Maybe they are not so smart after all..... Maybe those Nordic bankers were right all this time... At least did not lost any money, actually gained some from this expedition..

Well have been playing around with some West €uropean government bonds*

On left hand side there is purcase day (hanktintapvm), then some amounts sensored by good taste, then on right hand side (muutos) how many percent value of those papper has change, how many days I have own those (Päiviä), and of course per annum (P/A %)...

So value of those paper has grown up on speed 5,98% during this time, my point of view has produce 8,10%, a.k.a. I have beat index little over two per annum...
Well, you could say that I would made 24% if I would buy on 02.19, but on another hand I would made only 4,58% if I would buy few days later, so I think there is possibility that even average joe can beat index, even it seems to be impossible for professional bankers around the world...
I have actually manage to do this same with Invest grade papers, there numbers are my 10,04 against index 7,39..

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Somewhere I saw Greek 10 year Bonds are 6.8% as of a couple of days ago. That is quite a risk premium given that the Euro countries would back Greece and prevent a default. If there was a default it would hurt the Euro pretty bad and the Germans and the French would not like to see the Euro weaker, so they will support Greece. The Greeks will hate them for the austerity measures they will impose for their help (guarantees?) but the Greeks would like the IMF even less. It will be a tricky business, but Greece will not default.

You have done well in this market with your investments. I hope the string continues for you.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Hello Joe,

Yes in deed, I thing generally all Greece papers did yield something like 280 point on aftermarket against German papers, so it would end up something like that.....
If you want found some certain papper, then Börse Frankfurt is very good place. From there you can found ISIN -number and with that any local broker should be able to buy that papper....
Well you can buy those directly with your own computer, but Bloomberg plug in will cost aprox 2000 US$ per month, so I do not have lightest idea how that work...

Apropoo,
when Greece start to sank I actually did try open bank account one local bank called Proton, but never receive any kind of answer.
On that moment I was not anymore so very interested to open another deposit account so did not put so much effort to found another possibility..
Odd on that matter that I have always get receive even thou write to Aztec bank on Guatemala, but not any sign with these Greece fellows...

When this hold crisis started, there was simply explanation (true fact) why Italian banks did not suffer about CDO's.
Local bankers simply cannot understand Enegelish, so they did not buy any CDO papers, simply because they did not understand marketing materials....

Who knows, maybe those Greek fellows cannot understand English either.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Brink and I were discussing the "non coverage" of the Greek situation today - so called "news" coverage here in the US is terrible.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I really do not know anything about that edge of Europe.

There is general strike on Greece again, but to be honest I cannot even understand what difference it would make...
They are not working on German accuracy, more like Mediterranean manjana -mental... So what on earth it would make difference, if waiting some paper from local bjuro would take two month instead on one month when thay are actually working...
Maybe if they stike for year they might loose vine from grocery shop's and would need to offer milk for children...

But there is one very interesting strike here on North right now..
Stevedores are on strike and they have manage to surround hold country....

Timing is quite ultimate, it is almost like order strike from artillery and mortars on same time to local marker square on market wednesday...

I have wrote some time ago that twenty years ago there was Great Depression here, it striked harder that Stalin, with this I mean that economy was more severly dropped that during WWII.
Well this time drop is actually bigger than on WWI, so right now Finland economy is worst skenario since Great Famine.

Back to stevedores.
On time on Kekkoslovakia, devaluation on money (markka) was king's all cure for all disease.
On praxis it meant force confiscate of private wealth, but on another hand it also did outsource unemployment. This was because value of money was synthetically cut down, a.k.a. labor cost was able to keep very low.
Average joes never notice this because it was illegal to move money outside country. If my father would do this kind of thing that I like to do, he would face severe charges agains government and do jail time....
Well, becouse there was not unemployment, there was not also need to do any research and development, and since those days we have still a _lot_ heavy industry and forest cluster is backbone on nation....

Now at least two (have not check today's number) huge papermill and one steel factory has shut down simply because all their warehouses are full, and they cannot get rid of those because all harbors are closed because strike.
Stevedores create something like 0,03% of all labors, but they have now manage to get huge amount industry workers to join their strike with this tiny handywork...

This actually could be end of industrial era here. Problem with that is there that we have only one high tech company, Nokia.
There is high possibility that Finland will be next Greece, some lot more wealth nation need to rescue it.

If there is any luck, Finland will be re -attached to Sweden wink

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I know a Finnish company UPM-Kymmene bought the Blandin Paper mill in Grand Rapids, MN. Since they make coated papers for magazines they have been hurting because the magazine pages have been down.
