I have not been able to get my GPU to work on Ubuntu. I have downloaded the Nvidia driver, and BOINC recognizes the GPU, but I always get no work available from SETI and Collatz. What is your secret. I could add a couple more GPUs if I could figure out how to get it to work on UBUNTU. Not if this is the same in ubuntu as it is in windows but boinc won't let you use gpu if boinc is running as a service. Am thinking it's the same though. Empty your wu's, uninstall, reinstall but not as a service. If I get another card, might move my ATI to my ubuntu box. Will probably go nvidia so I can crunch gpugrid.

Guess I got the GPU bug and been looking at cards. Kind of got my eye on an ATI 6850. But nvidia looks pretty strong too when looking at comparable prices. Why does ATI us 2GB memory but nvidia is at 1.5GB? Haven't been into the gpu game in awhile so guess I'll have to do some research.

Just had another crash. Turned it up a bit before so backed it off and reduced another core. Will see if it makes it through the night.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 64bit.
----------------------------------------Here is what I did to get it to work. I downloaded the latest driver from nvidia, NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.29.run Made it executable. Went to "system-administration-additional drivers" and made sure the "proprietary" driver was disabled/not installed. Then I did a "sudo service gdm stop" to kill gnome and drop me into a command line mode. Then I ran the nvidia installer, ignoring the errors. Then I added the "sleep 30" that kateiacy told me about a few posts back. Then rebooted. That is it. ![]() edit: I also put the line at the end of my .profile export SWAN_SYNC=0 [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 5, 2011 6:18:35 PM] |

Finding out that tweaking on the gpu is a bit touchy. Added another core for the CPU and leaving the settings alone to see what happens. Boy could we make some points if WCG used the gpu.

The lease is up on my computer at work and I had to pick out a new workstation from the Lenovo site and keep it below 1400 buck. Did you know that Lenovo does not carry any i7 CPUs for there workstations or professional PCs!!!! Ridicules. Ended up getting a X3440 Xeon. Anyone know how good (or bad) this processor is? I'm stuck with it for 3 years so I hope it's a good CPU.

I think NVidia has an unusual memory bus width, so you end up with unusual memory sizes, but I could be wrong. It's been that way for a while. 1 GB is plenty for the newest games at the highest detail settings and screen sizes. You really only need more for multi-monitor gaming. You probably need very little for BOINC stuff on the GPU, but that's just a guess.

In other news, after I got back from vacation Dec 26-Jan 1 I discovered my HTPC/gaming box is dead. Doesn't turn on. After some debugging, I'm pretty sure the power supply is fine as the power LED on the mobo lights up correctly. So probably dead mobo. It's an ASUS P5Q PRO, their support still hasn't gotten back to my RMA request after 3 days now.... argh. I hope I don't have to call em.
----------------------------------------EDIT: Update, I did a live web chat and I gotta call for an RMA... good news is they are open until midnight EST during the week so I don't have to muck around with my work schedule to do it. Now I gotta keep patient for the replacement rather than pull the trigger on some new Sandy Bridge innards.... ![]() ![]()

That bites your mobo died. At least you can RMA it. Yeah, those sandy bridge chips look tempting but I'll wait until the xeon equivalent comes out before I decide. I prefer dually set up. Pretty sure we will see folks crunching with them shortly. Movieman has been crunching with his for a little bit. From what I have read, the energy savings alone will be worth the upgrade.
