Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I have had no trouble running Prime Grid and Collatz on a single-precision Nvidia card (would you believe, an Ion!?) Both projects have ATI applications, but I've never had an ATI card so can't vouch for them. I'll be interested to hear how it goes.

I am pumped! The parts for my new machine should be in sometime this week. It's a pretty modest machine by some of you folks' standards, but way better than anything I've had to crunch on so far. It will have an AMD Phenom II X4 610e processor, the new low-power Nvidia Fermi card (GeForce 430), and 8 Gb of RAM. It will be a power-sipper with a 65 W processor and a 49 W GPU. It will let me do some things for work on my home machine and will crunch WCG and GPUGrid whenever I'm not using it. Can't wait! :)

Best to all for 2011!

Kate

Congrats on the new cruncher. You'll have to let us know how it works out for you.

Contests on the new cruncher. You'll have to let us know how it works out for you.

Yeah, let us know how performs for you. Not sure what contests Bearcat has in mind, that Fermi card should be a screamer. Congrats on the new machine.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Was able to get the openCL driver loaded on my sons computer and he is now crunching on his 5770 on Collatz. Did not have to do anything but attach and set my preferences to use only GPU and NOT CPU. My CPU is dedicated to WCG.
I was also able to load the CUDA drivers on my macbook which has a GeForce 9400M and I'm running both PrimeGrid and Collatz. Loaded cuda and nothing else. Just make sure your pref's are GPU only.
Now I have 3 GPUs going. biggrin

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I believe your GeForce 9400m is basically the same as a first-generation ION. My Ion runs Collatz WUs in about 8 hrs 40 mins each, and Prime Grid Wus in a little over 7 hrs each. It's downright embarrassing how many BOINC points those WUs get -- 700 and something for Collatz and 2300 for Prime Grid.

I ran Collatz for a long time, but switched over to Prime Grid when it got a CUDA app. Collatz seems to hog almost an entire CPU thread even when set to use only GPU, whereas Prime Grid uses only a tiny proportion of a CPU thread and doesn't slow down WCG jobs running on the CPU. At least, that's been my experience running on an Atom 330 CPU with the ION. And believe me, the Atom is so SLOW you don't want anything slowing it down further! This machine wasn't bought to be a cruncher, but since I have it, there's no point in letting it sit idle.
Slow crunching is faster than no crunching... biggrin

Nice. I decided to crunch with my Mac mini. Got this after I sold my Mac pro. Didn't think about the gpu on it. Brink, what kind of temps are you getting from gpu crunching with the Mac book? When you say ensure prefs are gpu only, is that in the projects preferences or in boinc?

Another question on gpu crunching? Did you make an account before adding the project to boinc? Not sure if anything can be setup prior to DL wu's.

I'm not Brinktastee, but...

In the project's preferences.

Another question on gpu crunching? Did you make an account before adding the project to boinc? Not sure if anything can be setup prior to DL wu's.

You can create the account on the project web page before attaching. That's not what the projects say to do, but I too prefer to have the preferences set up before attaching.

What GPU does the Mac Mini have? My husband as a Mac Mini. He crunches WCG and Climate Prediction on the CPU but hasn't crunched on the GPU. I was thinking it was just an Intel integrated GPU; hope I'm wrong and that we can get it into service, too.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Yes me too. I always create the account first and set all the setting then attach.

I don't have a macbook pro so there is no sensor on the GPU itself but the 3 heat sinks have senors on them and they run between 50 and 65C. I also have this running under it: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0338135

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Thanks, both of you for the help. Went ahead and tried this morning. Got CPU wu's only. Now looking at boinc messages, shows no gpu available. Do I need open GL or CL? I have GL at this time. Went ahead and removed project after trying to configure through Prime grid. If you have any suggestions, besides buying another gpu, am all ears.

Kate, I have a 2010 mini. Has the 320m nvidia integrated graphics. According to nvidia, does not support cuda so I think I'm out of luck.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Tried removing drivers and loading open CL but still won't work. Guess my gpu won't work for prime. Has anyone crunched for DNETC? Looks interesting. Hate to go buy a different card but seems Nvidia is the preferred gpu to crunch with.
