Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I have done DNETC with cpu just a little bit just to get some points on the board.

Nvidia is the way to go. I've been a die hard ATI guy from way back for gaming but for crunching Nvidia wins out.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I think I know what's wrong. Going over your posts and saw something about running boinc as a service, which I am. Will follow the instructions on the link you provided and try again. Hope it works. Looked at prices on a nvidia 470. Might have to consider if this don't work.

There are some really cheap older video cards that will do gpugrid. (double precision) (EVGA is my choice)

http://www.microcenter.com/search/search_resu...ht=Any&prt=NewProduct

The GeForce 240 and 430s are under a hundred bucks and crunch pretty good according to the forums on gpugrid.

edit: That service thing is only for vista and win 7. XP works great as a service using gpu and is faster at crunching in gpu. (All this info I gleaned from the gpugrid forums.)

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Well, it worked. I went back to win7 so I could give gpu crunching a shot. Sure enough, reinstalled without running as a service, and am now crunching with the gpu. Will monitor to see if any errors happen now. Did you adjust your fans on the gpu? How many wu's is your gpu crunching at a time? Mine is 1. Thanks for the link. Will keep that in mind. Still have to find another xeon E5472 to fill the empty slot on my 2nd cruncher. Thanks again for the help.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Just had a crash. Log didn't tell me much. Was crunching max cores so dropped to 15 CPU cores to crunch and knocked the speed down a bit on the gpu. Have my fans on gpu set to 75% so temps are around 150. How do you have your gpu set up to crunch?

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

On my main cruncher pc I have the EVGA GTX 470. In linux there is no way to throttle the speed of the fan, so I let the driver take care of the fan speed. It seem to fluctuate in temp, 78-82C. I also leave one thread open for the gpu to use. So on my i7 I crunch with 7 threads on boinc leaving one thread for the gpu. I only crunch on gpu unit at a time. Takes about 6.5 hours to crunch a unit for gpugrid, and for that one task you get anywhere from 9K to 12K points per unit. thinking Hmmmm

[Soap box]
My boy has an ATI/AMD 5770 (I think) doing Collatz and his card does a unit every 11 minutes. Here is the part that I don't understand:
clock time seconds = 701.30
CPU time seconds = 700.00
Claimed credit by boinc = 6.43
Granted Credit = 800.34 <--WT#...?
Really!!!! 800 points for 700 seconds of work. shock Messed up!? They are making a mockery of the boinc point system IMHO! Can anyone set me straight on this???

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

How's the gpu crunching going? I have a ATI 5670 I'm trying to find a place to crunch with. Only single precision so limited. Prime grid looks promising but can find the requirements.

GPU crunching right along. Got 642,482 points so far at gpu grid.
I think Collatz also will use singe precision cards. Let me know if you get it working. My son's computer has a 5770 which is also a single precision card. I would like to get something going on his also.

I don't want to go back to work after having 10 days in a row off. I think I may double my efforts in finding a new place to work this year. It's time to do so when you don't look forward to getting up in the morning. straight face

Too bad WCG does not support GPU processing, I have done significant work on GPUGRID, Collatz and Milky Way accumulating over 88 Million Boinc points over the last two years as you can see from my banner, and 100% of that would go to WCG if it supported it.

I have not been able to get my GPU to work on Ubuntu. I have downloaded the Nvidia driver, and BOINC recognizes the GPU, but I always get no work available from SETI and Collatz.

What is your secret. I could add a couple more GPUs if I could figure out how to get it to work on UBUNTU.

I would be on WCG far more often if it supported GPU processing. I have an HD5870 on the way and would love to put it to use here.

The claimed credits are based upon CPU time, not GPU time. The granted credit looks right for a Collatz work unit.
