Re: Minnesota Crunchers

The system comes with a dual processor board but only one processor installed. It is a 1U rack system. Once I get it up and running I will put a Kill-O-Watt on it and see what it draws for juice. I do know it is pretty loud when it fires up with all those fans. Thanks for the info.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Maybe run open case with full size heatsinks w/fans attached to kill the noise.

I don't really care about the noise as it will be running in one of the outbuildings with most of my other systems. My wife indulges me in a lot of things, but too many computers in the house is not one of them.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

_Before_ run it without cover, take a look is there any warning about how long it is aloud to let run without it.
This warning is usually inside surface of top cover.

I have seen some servers (old days, not lately) and much as I can say, those are build more or less on form of wind tunnel, cover working as one wall...

And those small U1 units are suppose to be some very loud, fans cannot operate with area, so it need to be compensate with speed of rotation.
So there is not much possibility designer tune those with shape..

Aajeah, you did mention model..
So please, keep cover on. If you remove it, you will only overheat that HW...
If you take a look on left side, those two most left fans need to push air through something that look like CPU heatsink (from video 1:30) and memory combs behind that..
Now if you remove cover, air will choose most less resistance path and will more rebound up when hitting heat sink...
There will be some air on heat sink but not any on memory comps...

I have one other 1U server and I have kept the cover on that one, so I will keep the cover on this one also. Thanks for the info.

Enjoy your time XS. As long as you're crunching it is good.

I just acquired a Dell 1950 with one xeon e5410 in it and will be looking to add a second one. It has 4gb of memory and I am wondering if I also need to upgrade that to 8gb or if the 4gb will be sufficient. I also need to find a drive for it. I plan on putting some flavor of linux on it. I believe you had/have something similar so any advice will be appreciated. I think I can have it up and running for under $100.

Thanks

I have some old ATA (IDE) hard drives you can have. Not sure how reliable they are though. Talking like 20-80GB size/age I think.

Sounds like late fall. Post a pic of this gloomy climate.

The Dell 1950 takes sata drives. I have acquired a used drive for it. I do have several systems that still have IDE drives. I have had some crash in the past because I have some systems I leave on 24/7 until they die. A 20gb is plenty big enough for an OS and BOINC. If you wish to part with them I can sure use them. Send me an email with the details.

Thanks

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

@ Sgt Joe. I have 4 or 5 20GB IDE hard drives that I no longer use that I'm pretty sure are still in good working order. If you're willing to pay shipping (should be less than $10) you're welcome to them. Let me know.
