Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Merry Xmas everybody!

Think some good news to your county.

I was able to found some CLN's of US-steel from tiny sub-room (Saxess SE SOX) of Swedish Exchange.
As long as US-steal does not get belly up, will gain 6% interest and get capital back on end of 2019.
Beautiful part is that got mine on price of 55,90%, so will kind of get two capital back with price of one. Nope, do not mind at all, can bear if it happens smug

I had heard of CLN's but never really bothered to research them. After reading this , I do not think this would be a good investment for me. I somewhat understand how these work, but if you purchased this note at a 55.9% discount and the stated interest is 6%, that implies a fairly high degree of risk. However, in return for that risk the potential reward is fairly substantial. I do not think U.S. Steel is going to go bankrupt, but then I did not think General Motors would either. I hope they can make the tariff stick. That may make China rein in their own production and not try to dump their excess in either the U.S or Europe. Minnesota is home to numerous iron mines and they are shutting down left and right. There are quite a few of the miners and workers in associated industries in that area of Minnesota who have been laid off. I tend to stay away from investments I do not fully understand. I hope this investment does well for you.
Cheers

As thumb rule, I would say that you are betting for status quo of two company.
Company (bank) that issues paper and company that is target.

On that Wikipedia article, there is mention that lut folks lost their money since Lehman's bankruptcy. So it obviously seems to me that there was not anything wrong on target companies, but since these papierers also carry risk of issuer (the bank), low oxygen on bank will hit owner of CLN also.

And yes really, it does not require bankruptcy, official definition is reorganisation of 10M $US loan or negotiation. First one is something that happens all the time, corporation do get their debt reorganised all the time, without even being close to bankruptcy or anything.
So there is lut stuff, which I think is not so visible on Wikipedia article, really think that some gel head (local term for young and hungry broker working with comission on bank) has wrote it. It is just too smooth to be actual, sound more like sell speak to me.

Then there is also clear kill (my own term) situations.
If this US-Steel CLN that I did purchase, will go sour, I will receive some amount back through recovery process. I actually might get more that I did pay myself, it is possible that return rate is 60% and if I did pay 56%, ode de joy.
But if I do purchase CLN as part of bigger index, it will just die. Drop dead, not any recovery process, nada, zero, >null, that's it. I just lost all those index-CLN's, immediately, no question asked.

If you like sit on poker table, these are some very nice items.
Did just "lost" some money on Abengoa bankruptcy (EU High Yield Index ), but do not mind, since I did buy my index on 94 and now even after one banckrupty, same index is yielding 96. So have not lost any capital, but has gain 4,5% interest all this time. Still gain 4,43 after this one clear kill .

You may be right. Some of those guys are slipperier than wet eel. My rule of thumb is : If it makes me uncomfortable or gives me an uneasy feeling, don't buy it. I think you picked the right song.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I used to build systems but the cost per system ran about $1000 depending on what you put into it. Of course, they had the latest (mostly) generation of most components but were consumer grade parts. I changed my strategy about 5 years ago when I found an IBM x3650 M2 server on ebay for $300 with 2HDD, two quad-core processors, 24GB memory. This is a commercial server grade system (not the latest model though). I decided to build my farm with servers from resellers and never pay more than $500 per unit. Minimum config is 2 socket, at least 20GB memory and an HD. I bought a supply of replacement HDs for $50 each and now each system is RAID 1. These are not the fastest systems but have lots of threads. Now the M3s are showing up with the hex-core procs at the same price. They are servers so they tend to be noisy

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I have been buying used servers, but they are getting a little long in tooth now. I have usually picked them up at auctions for less than $100. The servers are built to run 24/7 and so far they have. You don't even need a hard drive as I have had one running for about 8 months on just a thumb drive. Gradually over the next few months I will be looking to part with some of the present ones if I can find the right opportunity to upgrade. They are noisy though so I have them running in a shed.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I wish I could put mine in a shed but down here in the south the tropical climate will destroy them (like my tools) unless there is some sort of climate control. I had a 4 socket 3950 M2 with 128GB of memory that I picked up for $500 but it pulled 6 amps and when the electricity bill reached $600 in the summer, I had to discontinue it. You're right, they just run 24/7. Have only had to replace a 2 HDs in 4 years and they were used HDs when I bought them.
