Thank you for the link, Captain. It's lovely.
----------------------------------------Santa Claus is Joulupukki, Christmas is Joulu and Rudolpf the Red nosed Reindeer is Petteri Punakuono. Let's make this Christmas special for the children, you say. ![]() Well, you already did ... - and they sit quietly and practise saying Joulu, Joulupukki and Petteri Punakuono - inbetween I hear them groan "perkele" ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 3, 2011 12:05:22 AM] |

Do you celebrate on the evening of December 24th as it should be done ![]() And what's for dessert? The children started practising "lisää joulukinkkua, kiitos" at once - nobody heard a sound from them ever after - maybe a softly whispered perkele ![]() |

Our Badge Master, TLD, just dealt the badges to all the participants
in Base Camp's Trek #31 to Team My efforts against Childhood Cancer. It was designed by nap2614 from Boise, Idaho and this is how it looks: ![]() |

We think that badge is nice, too, and the workaround with
your team name is a good idea. You may keep this one as a souvenir. May I ask you to fire up the savusauna, please? We have a New Base Camper - tanner2 - coming in from the cold Minnesota to the cold Finland wanting to crunch some for your team. |

You will not believe this but I have been in one in Embarress,MN.
----------------------------------------My best friend moved there and he has one. Coldest spot in Mn. I camped out when it was -30 there. My Finland friend wears shorts unless it's colder than 35 degrees and thinks it's hot. http://www.embarrass.org/ ![]() |

Yes, I believe you, tanner2, because it's a small World, really,
when you dip into the Geography. Did you enjoy it? So your friend is Finnish? Has he lived in the US always? Did he build the sauna himself? I hope you mean F and not C - brrrr ... Many Finns picked the Upper Michigan Peninsula - probably for the cold and the birch trees ![]() |

But I'm glad you provided the link to Embarrass, because it answered several questions:
Embarrass - how did the place get this name? Oh, it says on the website: "Choosing a name for this new organized township has a tale of its own. "Embarrass" comes from a French word which means "to hinder, confuse or to be complicated". The Nordic influence can be seen in - yes: The Flying Finn - the local monthly newsletter. Lutherans, some Scandinavian and Finnish-ish names. Lutefisk - for the Norwegians (and possibly the Finns) and Base Camper TLD who is under the Norwegian diet influence in Washington state -57F is almost the same in Celsius/Centigrade -49.5 - and that's cold! Denmark's record cold is -31C/-23.8F And here is the Finnish connection: "The earliest Finns were drawn to the area to work in the iron ore mines around 1900. The Finns, known for their determination or "sisu" carved their homesteads and fields in the area's forests and began farming. Having a similar climate, biome, and topography, Embarrass attracted many Finnish immigrants to this area." |

Once starting to drive here soon see lake after lake after lake. So mostly our saunas are built next to water and we have that much privacy to go swimming naked. I drive twice a month Saimaa tour and that is one trip to take summer time. Saimaa Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saimaa Google Saimaa and see the pictures search. Thank you and thanks tanner2 for joining. |
