Re: "The survivors"

I actually did a few of those.

However, being just 25 hours away from a gold badge did not seem like a good time to do all of them.

The i7 had 6 running, the AMD had 3 running so I did restarts on those two PCs.

In effect 9 BETA WUs were tested.

Anything more than that would be beyond the scope of volunteering.

Unlike the President I have not sworn an oath; but like him I don't have to follow the rules. But then I don't think I'm a king.

"Almost Half a Billion Worth of Bitcoins Vanish
Mt. Gox Says It Lost 750,000 of Customers' Bitcoin to Fraud"
http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB1000142...p_LEFTWhatsNewsCollection

"...Mt. Gox filed for bankruptcy protection in Japan and confirmed rumors it had lost almost 750,000 of its customers' bitcoins,
as well as roughly 100,000 of its own."

Crypto currency avoids central banks and is a loser by design.

"The disappearance underscores the risks of currencies that exist only online and aren't backed by a central bank.
Mt. Gox wasn't overseen by national regulators, so there is no entity to step in and back investors' deposits."

In this modern age of the Internet it is possible for bank robbers to work from home.
They no longer need a gun, mask, and getaway car.

Re: "The survivors"

nasher,
I see that you are adding a month of run time every 2 days.
That's quite good!

I hear you about baitcoin, but it has made the news again:
An exchange CEO [a woman in Singapore] was found dead.
The anonymous creator was outed in Newsweek, along with his home address; he's on the run.

Re: "The survivors"

The CCD on one of my cameras is defective; everything is pink and blurred.
I found the part online for $21 and will fix the camera myself.
The camera is like a large watch in that it has a lot of tiny screws.

My cameras [2 Nikons and 1 Panasonic] are aging and need to be replaced.

The Nikon D5300 looks very interesting.
The WiFi feature is cool because you can use your phone to see the camera image and trigger the shutter.
Also, the photos are automatically transferred to the phone for easy sharing.
Now comes the tough decision; spend $1,100+ on a new camera or spend it on coffee and doughnuts?

Get a second camera, and take pictures of every screw as you remove it. I'm sure there will be some leftover after assembly.

I have the D5100 - a great camera (above my modest abilities). Yeah, the wifi feature would be good for uploading, but i don't mind plugging in a USB cable to do this.

Be prepared to buy some new lenses. The D5300 is APS-C (smaller than full frame 35mm) and has no focus motor - they're in the lens now.

Very happy with it.

You come up with the best ideas!

I have been looking at cameras and packages.
There are many international cameras being sold in the US; they have no Nikon warranty.
There are many sellers that bundle inferior lenses and fail to mention that they don't work as one would expect with the D5300.
So many lenses so little time.
Errors here can be costly.

I know the format is DX but in my case the full frame is not worth the extra money.
It is possible to make wall murals from 24MP images.
I can get by with much less.

The features that interest me the most are AF, VR, and remote control via Android phone.

I have been mispronouncing Nikon.
I say neigh-con, the company says it is knee-con.

Re: "The survivors"

On one of the WCG forum threads there is a hint of what's coming.

If you have a weak password your team affiliation may be changed without your knowledge. devilish

It appears that members of the "crunching for crime" group have an incentive to steal your points as you complete them. beat up

In this way they earn more xyz without purchasing more processing power. money eyes

WCG will rue the day when they opened the door to this bunch. skull

Re: "The survivors"

I have a great idea for a new Team Challenge.

What team am i on today?

In this challenge, the team captain must verify team membership everyday, at 8:00 AM.

Points are awarded for each member who was involuntarily moved to some other team.

Additional points accrue if the member didn't discover for a week that this happened.

(Points are deducted if the team member left voluntarily.)

Bonus points apply if the member had their password changed and can't even get back to their original team.

The winning team will be those whose percentage of members were involuntarily changed (Total active members / total rehomed members).

Prizes could be awarded (say, a team visit to Disney World?) devilish
