Merry Christmas!

laughing Merry Christmas to everyone, may peace and happiness come this season, and run the whole year thru. laughing

Tis was the night before Christmas, and all though the home,
Systems were running, producing a constant drone.

The case fans were running, cooling with care,
With hopes that a cure, soon would be there.

Hey Courine et al!
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, or all Blessings be upon the Godess of us all! Whatever, Peace be with you all.

Re: Merry Christmas!

Btw, I am finding more and more that some projects we crunch are better with single core machines, and others with dual core machines. And some work better with Win XP, and some work better with Linux. Jury is still out on Vista, so sorry...
Mac, well ... I owned one of the first Lisa machines, and I was thrilled. But that was twentysomething years ago...
Point is, let the buyer beware. If a project is hamstringing your system, or your expectations of results in points or results, then that project should have been off of your affected system 5 minutes ago. We do expect, rightly, state of the art software from our vendors, and WCG is no different. There are no Ivory towers here. What we are doing is too darn important.
Our responsibility in this undertaking is the contribution of as much runtime as possible. Points and results are fun, but we are not getting paid for them, and I am really beginning to have a serious problem with that. Because the Pharmaceutical companies certainly will when our crunch time research data is used to make some very promising medicines for our sick friends and loved ones.
But, in the meantime, I will continue to volunteer my abacus for the greater good, realizing that the whole is always greater, and more important, than the sum of it's parts. cool rose good luck

Merry Christmas! biggrin

BTW, I started switching over to FAAH and Folding just after the midnight update 23/24th and in 24hrs my runtime has gone up by 200hrs and points by about 20,000 - this should increase a bit as the last of the HCC jobs clear out of my queue.

It just shows how broken the code is on multi-cores.

Well it could be a bit merrier for the HCC Project. But there is much that we can do as a group to help resolve this issue.

First and foremost, relax, dont kill yourself having a bad time. If you cant run HCC work units, I may be able to trade crunching with another team that can run HCC for us that is biased towards other projects.

Second, the worst is actually over. The primary detection of problems are laced with adjustment anxiote. Once the shock has passed and a new direction can be set, things will return to an even keel fast.

Third, report our findings to the WCG techs, while best determing how to release this information more publicly. As in the anxiote this caused us could spread into an un-needed chain reaction of panic. Which is the true enemy.

Re: Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas Crunchies!

Changed up some of my profiles.. not sure how it's gonna work, but we'll see.

the 2 faster units (the 3400+ and the dual p3) are set to all projects, with a 2 day prefetch (so if i get the issue w/ units not uploading it'll keep working until i can catch it.)

the 2 slower boxes are set to the DDDT project only, seems best for aging boxes anyways. dunno :P

also put the newest version of BOINC on all of them except the linux box. guess it'll update that when newer package is available for that distro.

Anyways, you kids don't have too much of that spiked Eggnog this holiday. ^^

I set up my PCs as you suggested Courine, but I still think that the hcc project is a failure of programming. Till they do not change the code, it'll not be on my project list. I rather spend those CPU cycles on some other project, that is returning results more efficiently.

Right now, I'm not crunching HCC at all. I'm clearing my buffers and trying a run with all projects with HCC removed. At the end of that, I will know by imperical results what the problem areas are and how best to avoid them.

I just hope you hang in there a bit and run the other project here and not go outside WCG much, as you will see people coming here for this:
