Running HCC

I still have all my profiles set to run all projects and I haven't really noticed a problem with the HCC not running properly. Granted it doesn't run as fast as some of the other projects but to me it is a more important project.

Re: Merry Christmas!

Hi Courine & other crunchers.

I don't know if you saw my data points for HCC machine architecture.
It appears that this project requires a serious FPU and the fastest memory bus you can get (DDR speeds are 17% faster than SDram for the same FSB & processor). Surprisingly, a larger L2 cache doesn't seem to make much improvement, probably due to the page fault issue.

my HCC observations

The reason why you haven’t seen any problems, is by running all the projects you spread out the signs of the HCC effect. To test this, don’t run HCC on your multicore machines. You will see your stats go up.

See, if it were just that they are harder I would crunch them without end. The problem is that it is a big waste of computer power that could be best put to work on other projects here, if the problems is machine dependent.

Instead, I suggest we trade around with teams that are biased toward other interests here at WCG. This way we can have our cake and eat it too. The HCC Wu'S get crunched and we loose a headache. I can do this as a test with a team I know first, but if this works, would you guys go along with it?

What this would require is that if i find a team like GAY USA that runs mostly FAAH, that we run their work where they run ours. This would be done on only effected units. If you dont see a problem now days, then just check you HCC units if you run multicore. Slower machines run a greater risk of crashing if less than 1 meg ram. So they are best suited to short run work, like DDDT.

But see MM, if what I see is true, then the problem is widespread and causing as much as 10% loss of production as we sit. It's just that its not just we as a team, but as we as in WCG. As the issues at hand keep leading not only to the HCC problematic nature, but to a retrievable waste we as teams and member can recover through organization.

On the home front, this is a disaster for recruiting. If a new person crashes, they don’t know that it is not normal and leave. I was just about to open the gates to the parent group that owns me. A group that have gaming machines, but being gamers, are paranoid. Think of what would happen it I do this and they follow suit as being new.

I was working on a way to get them to come over for months. I even developed this:

to make it more like what they would want to see while providing incentive. But right now I would be a fool to invite them. As if the come and its a wash, they will not return and disregard all the work this team has ever done. Closing the door on a vast group of people that have machine they trust their virtual lives too. If I do this wrong or I have any major problems in process while they are being introduced, this team could turn into a train wreck in slow motion. If I do this right, I could double production in a month. So the plans for any of this are on hold for a few days to figure out if I dare risk any actions on my part before I take another step.

biggrin Re: Running HCC

Nice to see you jal, good work! I think you can see why im worried. It's not about nothing. I am working on that q6600 i got back in sept. when it is up, i will run a test that may further prove your point, Roger's and mine.

The point Im making though is we can do much to fix this, whether the techs fix it or not. Ask around to see if your team would be interested in trading processing power with non-cancer bias teams. If everyone adjusts their machines to work on the best projects that machine class can work on or trades with another team that can, we can all benifit.

This may seem like a big negitive, but in the end there is much to be gained. Not just for HCC, but all projects here.

applause Re: Running HCC

Right now there are 2 crewmates out of service. I have them by email and the problems are only temporary. Patton and ISIS1 are getting new machines up to replace their damaged systems. I am working hard to get the rest of the hardware here integrated and working myself, but there is much to do.

The way I have tried to posture has lead to some success. Since some of the machines here currently cant run HCC, I am trying to compensate for the loss of results recently by running only DDDT. This should be enough prevent any other needed involvment in stats recoverey by anyone else here, as we head into the next few months of competition.

Realize, we are the most winning team in the team challenge system, followed closely by IBM Brazil Global Command Center. We are not the most powerfull team, but have achieved this by sheer activity. Realize also, that the mark of an exceptional team is its involvement in civic local activities. This is just as true here as in real life. So the participation by our team in these events has shown much of this teams good character, worthy of this honor.

Well, if anyone notices. confused
