Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 31 smilesmile

How did the rest of you's discover WCG? I cannot remember how I learnt about it. I crunched for years and years with seti@home.. then migrated over here, although now with the extra computing power soon, might resume SETI as another project.

I was folding for Folding@Home before someone told me about WCG and how it was more effective. Folding@Home didn't have a GUI interface and the console was always giving me problems so I switched over to see how it was. So that's how it started..

Last Thanksgiving I put a new Quad core into dedicated crunching and it's been running 24/7 ever since.

Up to this day, I crunch unknown of the progress that's being made. The organizations that we crunch for don't give us any updates at all.

Stanford still has more people folding than IBMs WCG crunching.. Either way, what drives me to keep crunching is the feeling that I'm doing something for humanity. I hope the dedication, along with costs (electricity/hardware) is worth it in the end.

How does video card crunching work if I have the cards in SLI?

If I have one video card with a C2D, does that mean I have to dedicate one core to the video card?

Nah, the new versions have figured it out. My pc runs 3 cores at 100% 1 core at 90% and the graphics card. Yours should run 1 core at 100 1 core at 90 and the graphics card.

GPU crunching is still in it's infancy (how cool). Build 6.3.19 is the recommended version and it does use one core for the card. Build 6.3.21 only uses 0.09 of the core and uses the rest for cpu crunching (2+1 for a CD2). It has some bugs though. 6.3.24 is out ... but you have to have bigger balls than I have to use it yet. biggrin Never mind the points ... I think one of their projects has some merit ... but you have to decide for yourself. But heck, vid cards are cheap ... if you have a PCI x16 slot and an adequate power supply to drive it ... Why not give it a shot?

Don't you have some homework to do? Classes tomorrow. laughing biggrin laughing

This might be my worst week in college so far. crying

I want to get a 260 GTX or 2 SLI 9800 GTs in SLI. But I'm not sure if my PSU can run it.. :X

If I can sell it for $60 it'd be nice.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139004

And then get a 750W. biggrin

Video cards are expensive for students who have no income. sad
