Re: New projects to come?

its not a big deal

it just means people need to learn to ramble on and make sure there post is long enough not to be made longer by there badges

It probaly only takes a few lines plus a sig at the bottom to make yours long enough...

Re: New projects to come?

I agree with SKgiven in that badges for 5,10 and even 20 years would be great and promt supercrunchers to reach for those goals. Personally Saphire is a reach for me. I did a rough estimate and it appears there are about 100 crunchers who generate 100,000 or more points a day. Though points are not equal to days (did not look at how many crunchers generate 50 or 100 crunching days a calender day) but needless to say these individuals organizations or what ever can very quickly reach saphire for any given project. Granted not everyone is after badges but the more incentives to encourage/attract more interest the better for what we really are try to accomplish in makeing the world better (sounds hoaky but is the bottom line!)

Re: New projects to come?

I will be interested even for a 50 & 100 & 500 & 1000 years Badge - not for me (I'm small fish) - but to make it competitive to the max.

Imagine somebody with the capabilities to make it all the way to 1000 years badge in the shortest time possible. Due to the nature of the projects, somebody with that capabilities will not strive to improve itself (aka to add more computers) only for the Saphire badge, that he can reach in one week. But for a 1000 year badge and also to change this cruncher's status to ... let's say MegaCruncher ... maybe they will put more resources for this goal.
Again, no big effort for WCG , but great return for that effort.

Let the Games begin !!!

Re: New projects to come?

I disagree. If too many crunchers aim at 100 or even 1000 years there's not much left for the average cruncher who aims at silver.. blue. Imagine short projects like AC@H. All WUs are sucked up by the mega crunchers, so there remain very few crunchers with 1000+ years and very few crunchers with higher levels than bronce or silver... Ok, the project will be completed earlier, but average crunchers can hardly reach their taget in time because there remain very few WUs for them to be completed in not much time. Not very motivating...

Interesting point, mweisensee!
Instead of inventing new badge levels for - let's say 20, 50, 100, 1000 years - one could add a small field below the badges with the number of totally contributed CPU years.
This would give the mega crunchers a proper recognition without having them assembled in one single project.

Edit: I think we are just highjacking this thread. Sorry, I know that this discussion does not fit for the IADS forum blushing

Re: New projects to come?

Interesting point indeed.
I toughed the idea is for the projects to be finished earlier rather than later. If WCG finishes projects earlier they can give access to more projects and even if a project is finished in six months instead of 2-3 years as it happens now you will still have enough time to get a gold or even a better badge. It is not about badges, it is about science and time.

I am sure WCG real goal for any project is to finish it earlier than later, not to provide users the chance to get their Sapphire badge.

So you got it all wrong: the badges are here to get more computer power for the projects. The primary goal of the projects is not to give you badges but to finish the needed science faster.

Re: New projects to come?

Before we get thrown out of this thread for hijacking I want to through in this idea. Instead of introducing more badges, why not just put the number of years (computing time) below or in the sapphire badge. That way the sapphire badges indicate the amount of computational time for all those megacomputers, but will not overtax the database by having to do all of the badges. Besides, the badges indicate that a minimum amount of time has been met to obtain that badge, but when you get passed the sapphire badge the numbers will do the talking. Then the numbers associated with the sapphire badge will tell how mega your computer/s is/are.
Or maybe replace the sapphire badge with the number of computational years.

Just a thought.

Sometimes I come up with a good idea, most of the time I don't.

Not exactly. Given the size of the scientific teams (usually only a few people) it would be more appropriate to say "as fast as they can deal with it".

The scientific lab is not a virtual entity with unlimited capability to deliver work to do or to absorb results. If we go too fast on some projects there will be shortages of WUs or the lab will not be able to receive all results, or both. Unforeseen events have caused such situations for the DDDT and Rice projects a few months ago.

Re: New projects to come?

How about making an animated/scrolling badge list so that it doesn't take up much space? That would solve the problem with the posts being too long.

Edit: If it were animated, you could even list the total run time next or underneath each one. Many people do this already in their signatures for BOINC projects.

Re: New projects to come?

personally i like seeing the badges how they are shown now... (sure if there are enough people over 2 years on any one project it might be nice to see a years attached to the badges...
I do not like to see animated scrolling things on my web pages myself... alot of time i am in places that they do not render properly or i can not see them properly.

the best way to see if a new project is coming is to watch the beta thread... almost every new job has had a beta run before it... although most of these arnt too long in time before the actual project starts.

and yes i am looking forward to both new projects as well as phase 2 and beyond.
