Re: New thread for It's raining Dengue, Hallelujah!...

Just what I thought - signal 11.

Did you turn on your machine first without knowing ur router/modem has not turn on yet or connected?

I think this is a bug with BOINC. I always got signal 11 when DNS/DHCP service is offline. for example, If I turn off the dns/dhcp on the server (in your case its in the router), the wu goes kaboom.

It took a me a while to figure it out until strike 2. So for strike 3, after a power outage, I make sure that the network is working before turning on the rest of the machines.

Not MBB but BBB (BOINC Behaving Badly), if this could be confirmed / reproduced, it would be a good item to carry back to the developers. Seen it only once where tasks of one non-WCG project err out if the project server is out, after reboot, when the client does this "active project call home" thing. Since my clients are set with a delayed service on Windows, PLUS a 120 seconds initial computing delay on all including the Linux quad, usually the WIFI/ADSL2+ has already managed to connect to the ISP, prior, and though on DHCP, got a pre-assigned IP in the router for each device/mac code combo. Any if reproducible, happy to carry it to the Alpha Mail Developers list.

One question on these power outs off a UPS: Is the shutdown, full or into Sleep/Hibernation state? Is the boot then a full boot or a resume?

Re: New thread for It's raining Dengue, Hallelujah!...

I think this problem is a big bit out of the RAIN topic.
Perhaps Sek is able to move the items to a thread into the BOINC Agent Support forum.

Just 1 of my 2 cents: Could you prevent this behaviour by putting

<dont_contact_ref_site>1</dont_contact_ref_site>

in your cc_config.xml

Re: New thread for It's raining Dengue, Hallelujah!...

Wish I could move posts and think the admin even can't move / split off posts, but if they can, yes agree it is a big OT. Whoever, please do x-post in new thread of all that's been said on this Sig 11 / Detach / Error cycle. The more documentation the better.

And without looking, my guess is it is not to check if the internet per-se is up. This is the second step after failing to connect to the project.

edit:

Yes the manual says:
<dont_contact_ref_site>0|1</dont_contact_ref_site>
To determine if a physical network connection exists, the client occasionally contacts a highly-available web site (google.com). If this flag is set, this behavior is suppressed. Image:list-add.pngNew in 5.10.14. This flag also suppresses a periodic fetch of a project list from boinc.berkeley.edu. Image:list-add.pngNew in 5.10.31

Re: New thread for It's raining Dengue, Hallelujah!...

Okay, on having the drum thumb on the update button, client 6.12 will just ignore under certain circumstances... it's either the scheduled back-off interval or 5 minutes before the client will send a new request:

David 13 Dec 2010
8743 - client: work fetch: if the chosen project is currently uploading a file,
8744 and an upload started in the last 5 min, don't fetch work from it.
8745 The goal is to merge the 2 scheduler RPCs
8746 (fetch work, report completed taskS) into a single RPC.
8747 Note: this may result in idleness in some cases.
8748 - scheduler: if client doesn't handle plan class (pre-5.10),
8749 check plan-class app versions anyway,
8750 but only use if it's a single-CPU app.
8751 This allows single-CPU app versions with specific requirements
8752 (like SSE) to be issued to old clients.
8753 From Bernd Machenschalk
8754

This most prominently would kick in with those sciences that have a X WU's per host limit... Beta, DDDT2 Type A, CEP2 if restricted. On my part of the planet, a CEP2 xxxx_4 upload usually takes just under 5 minutes i.e. near perfect timing. (RPC calls to the scheduler are the most taxing to any grid.)

Now, this thread might soon be near redundant and all will be forgiven and forgotten ;o)

Re: New thread for It's raining Dengue, Hallelujah!...

We are ready to start step 3 for the ts05 work units now as well. These should start being sent out in a few hours. In total, there are just over 84,000 of these work units (2 copies of each being sent out).

Re: New thread for It's raining Dengue, Hallelujah!...

84k unique WU, that is a lot. that should allow a lot of ppl to get a badge upgrade or 2. I am still setting out, since I already got my sapphire. However, once we start getting a steadier supply (or a huge release (> 150k)) then I MIGHT join in so I can at least reach the 5 yr mark. Anyone have an objection?

Re: New thread for It's raining Dengue, Hallelujah!...

hmmm... I got a real nice bunch of units here :)
Looks like the feeder sends out 1 or 2 at the time to my machines... so I've set projets to DDT2 (and betas ONLY) :)
Result: My machines are PACKED for what I've set the cache. But now I guess I even won't be able to work all off on time because actual runtime compared to ERT's seems to be much longer then expected... PE units are "supposed" to be like 10h, but I think, based on my returned results so war, it will rather more be likely around 15h (which is +50% per core, per WU) (i7920, VistaBiz32, 3GB Virt, 24/7). I need to see if my linux dev or Win Ulti 64 perform more or less inline with ERT.
(Btw, I tried a mix of diff. WU's but didn't change much)
But it's Ok, I may be "blue" by the end of the year... we'll see :)
