Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Today, we had our monthly phone call with our friends from the IBM-WCG team and everything seems to be in good shape. Afterwards, we had our Skype video conference with our collaborators at Stanford, which was – as always – very stimulating.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Dear Rickjb,
Yes, Q-Chem is written in a mix of C, C++, and FORTRAN, and compiled accordingly for the different platforms - no hand-optimization, assembler, or lower level tweaking involved. The code uses optimized libraries such as MKL or ATLAS, but for use on the World Community Grid we have to compromise a lot because we cannot tailor the executable for every host hardware.
You are also right quantum chemical calculations such as those we run in CEP are tough on all components of the hardware, while molecular dynamics has a much lighter footprint.

Hi Wolf834,
thanks for sharing! Yes, having a sprayable OPVs is one of the big goals of our research and that of other groups, and what makes this technology so interesting.
Best wishes from
Your Harvard CEP team

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

We finished a press release with our sponsor HGST about the use of HGST drives in our Jabba storage arrays – we’ll post it once it’s officially out.

Suleyman is currently putting up the rack for our jabba data storage arrays – it’s gonna be great having everything in its proper place. Pictures will follow shortly.

Have a great weekend, everybody! Here’s a fun excerpt from life on a university campus – the lighter side of academia and science, if you will. Enjoy!

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

WE ARE BACK!!!

Hi everybody,

We are sorry about the recent radio silence but we had a number of extremely important crunch periods back-to-back-to-back and that meant we had to radically cut some of our regular activities – like keeping you up to date on the projects. Sorry about that – but we are back to normal now, though.
Unfortunately, one other thing we cut back on was our regular maintenance check and clean-up runs on the server storage (Ms Piggy). We usually run them once a week and afterwards the data gets moved to the archive storage (Jabba), we generally have enough buffer so that we can skip a couple of these and the plan was to catch up this morning – but then the storage had already filled up. We apologize for any inconvenience cause by this. We should be back in business by now but if you notice any residual problems from this please let us know.

Best wishes
Your Harvard CEP team
