Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Carolina is back from her trip to Chile and currently migrates CEPDB to a proper database server and from the small SQL testversion of CEPDB to the big one.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

We implemented a new data query for our friends at Johns Hopkins University – they use the CEP density functional theory data to parameterize their new model Hamiltonian.

Quo vadis, terabytes?

I do not know how fast you are accumulating data, but you may want to up your quote by at least one order of magnitude. Depending on how fast new data accumulates, maybe two orders of magnitude if you have a long range view.
Cheers

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Hi everybody,
We wanted to give you a quick warning that there is a chance that we MAY be temporarily unavailable between March 16 and 17. Harvard IT is doing some maintenance and upgrade work on their datacenters and firewall and this could potentially affect the accessibility of our servers. Just giving you a heads-up, it’s not quite clear yet whether we will actually be impacted. Please let us know in case you experience problems, in particular if they persist after the 17th.
Best wishes
Your Harvard CEP team

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Hi Sgt.Joe,
we estimate that the new jabbas will provide sufficient capacity for another year or so. It is actually not a good idea to build up too much capacity ahead of time because the longer you wait to buy hardware the cheaper it gets and the longer your warranty lasts. And we can add tapes and jabbas on relatively short notice, so there isn't too much of a rush.
Best wishes
your Harvard CEP team

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

We interviewed a new undergrad for the CEP team – let’s see whether we can work out a project for her.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

I did not mean for you to add any capacity which is not now needed. I merely meant your quote may need to be upgraded to petabyte in the not so far future.
Cheers

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Oh yes, absolutely biggrin . We are approaching the petabyte threshold quite rapidly.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

We had our monthly phone conferences with our friends at IBM-WCG and Stanford today, and all seems to be going well. CEP is humming away nicely. Crunching on, then... biggrin
