Re: Talk of Expected Completion date of HCC

Any thoughts on where we are with this project? I know, I know, things are resetting due to the introduction of DSFL... Sek's chart is still showing 116 days left. Is that about on point?

Re: Talk of Expected Completion date of HCC

Coleslaw, what is your goal? I see you have over 2 years and I have over 5, but I haven't decided what goal I want to shoot for. Perhaps 10 years. I only get approximately 10 days for each calendar day so one year takes approximately 36 days. We have less than 120 days left which means almost 3 cpu years. Maybe 8 years is a more realistic goal, but why shoot for realism.

With the launch of DSFL, HCC should slow down enough to allow you your 10 year goal. Assuming of course you don't get distracted by the shiny new project and wander off.

For projects where work volume is known the days left are auto adjusting, so now it's up to 121 ;>)

(HFCC also stretched a bit and HCMD2 is frozen and will resume counting down when work flows again... likely be slower as there's more spread and the spreading will be thinning further this year.)

that's good news - as it means that the talked about other new projects (which, at one time, was 3), are still in the pipeline.

One down, another two new projects/phases still to come in 2011??? biggrin

Re: Talk of Expected Completion date of HCC

I still receive WU for HCC... But I don't think I will have enough time to reach Silver Badge for this project.

Good job guys !

Jean-Philippe.

No. New projects are a closely guarded secret until they are released and announced on the front page. The best one can hope for is vague hints, which is what this was.

You can be fairly certain there are (at least) two new projects in the works and their intention is to have them ready by this year. However, no one is going to make an official announcement or give a timeline because things happen and they don't want to hear "but you promised me..." As it is DFSL should probably have gone through a couple more beta rounds, but their resources are limited and they do the best they can.

Like the rest of us, it's time to sit and wait, hope for some Betas, and take the crumbs of information that do leak out.

Re: Talk of Expected Completion date of HCC

dkt...this is the netbook I picked up. I am already planning on upgrading it to the maximum 2GB ram it can support. It has 4 threads total. May not generate a ton of results, but should give me a good boost on badge upgrade and other runtime goals.

Edit: I also plan on putting a 4GB SD card in it to use for ready boost to help with speed. I have a couple just laying around after I recently picked some up for like $3 w/free shipping.

Re: Talk of Expected Completion date of HCC

Be careful with the cooling of that netbook. They are not meant to be running 24/7 at 100% CPU usage. Unless you're planning on abusing it until it dies honorably for the cause. biggrin

Re: Talk of Expected Completion date of HCC

defiantly be careful with a laptop on any BOINC type projects... laptops just were not designed to cool well at 100% cpu power.

----
as for me I have currently stopped out of grabbing these work units... the new shiny project has grabbed my attention for the short term at least.

and yes we hear vague references of new projects. but until they come online we don't know whats coming when.

I am sure part of this is because when they start running test batches in-house they find issues that delay a project so they don't want to announce an OFFICIAL start .. they just release them when the scientists and the work units are both ready, this process will allow some projects to start earlier than they planned and others to slip on the schedule without 10020502 questions of why hasn't yyy project been released yet.
