Why is it you have that lot of time on your hands all of a sudden, Captain rcc?

Re: "The survivors"

Maybe not... It's starting to get hot here (they say it will get to 90F today) and I'm going to have to start shutting my workhorse computer down during the day to save on air conditioning costs (and to save the computer from coming down hard during a momentary power outage in one of the many thunderstorms we also get this time of year). shock It's great for heating during the winter though! tongue

Re: "The survivors"

With a single core Pentium it will take 42 years to get sapphire in 21 projects.
Because projects are completed in a lot less time it makes it necessary to make choices.
If you don't have to make choices and wait to get a badge did you really earn it?

I agree that colleges/businesses/etc should be a different category of user than a private individual.
Competition is cool but the playing field is not level.
The point system is an attempt to level the field but I fail to see how it can equalize diverse platforms.
So I don't try to compete with others; that is not why I am here.
My numbers mean something to me and I don't expect others to be in awe of them.
Anyone that brags/boasts about their stats is an inconsiderate boob.
If you ask them why they crunch they will most likely not know.
Probably they view this as a game and scores are the prize.
We know that this is not a game and finding a cure is the prize.

Because all work and no play makes for a dull day.
There are some things I would like to do that are not work related and I would like to make some progress with them.

At work:
Management is expected to produce results.
To increase revenue.
To lower costs.
To make a profit.
To work hard every day.

At play:
Not expected to do anything.
Unless it is something I want to do--doing nothing is where I excel.

Re: "The survivors"

CEP2 uploads are "temporarily failing"

5/2/2012 11:05:03 PM | World Community Grid | Started upload of E207448_392_C.28.C20H10N4OS2Si.01284431.4.set1d06_1_4
5/2/2012 11:06:05 PM | World Community Grid | Temporarily failed upload of E207448_392_C.28.C20H10N4OS2Si.01284431.4.set1d06_1_4: transient HTTP error
5/2/2012 11:06:05 PM | World Community Grid | Backing off 3 hr 47 min 39 sec on upload of E207448_392_C.28.C20H10N4OS2Si.01284431.4.set1d06_1_4

I have unchecked the CEP2 project because at this time you can neither receive nor return work.
They are just backing up in the transfers queue.

There is a thread on this so tech support should know about the problem

I stopped crunching CEP2 some time ago because it was unfriendly to the casual cruncher (ie: > 4 hours between checkpoints.)
sad

Re: "The survivors"

I read SekeRobs comments on the other thread and upped my minimum queue size to 2.0 days.
Just in case this problem spreads to other projects.
It doesn't hurt to load a few days of work but do not exceed 3 days because BOINC cannot meet deadlines if you do.
Work fetch would not be impaired until the point that there are 2x more results to upload [for a grid, say WCG] than are cores in a system. Whence a quad has 8 of these stuck, nothing will come down anymore, and that goes for all sciences, not just CEP2. First practical act once you notice this is to suspend CEP2 tasks if getting close to the 2 times factor, that is if you're low on cache on the whole.

I have been running CEP2 without problems for some time.
As far as special requirements they don't look extreme.
CEP2 uses 1,024 MB of RAM and they recommend that leave application in memory is checked.
DDDT2 also uses 1,024 of RAM and that has had a lot of problems.

This problem appears to be at Harvard.
If their servers fail or stop accepting uploads everyone downstream suffers.
The longest outage at WCG that I am aware of was 3 days.
