Re: "The survivors"

I now have BOINC and WCG running on my cell "phone". (There has to be a better word to describe this device)
BOINC downloaded 5 WUs and is running 4.
4 - Beta SN2S (running 3 of these)
1 - FAAH Vina (running this)
It will be interesting to see the results show in WCGDAWS.

I don't know how successful this will be but this "phone" has 4 threads/CPUs on an ARM processor running at 1.5 GHz and 16 GB of internal RAM.
That is light years ahead of my first desktop PC.

Re: "The survivors"

Can you still make a phone call, or do you have to be plugged into the power grid all the time? biggrin

Re: "The survivors"

Depends on what the meaning of "plugged" means.

Do not have to be tethered to an AC adapter or USB port.
If the battery drops to 30% computation is suspended.
There is a preference tab so all of the options are user controlled.
The phone is using the same Default profile my Pentium 4 2.4 GHz uses.
It is automatically named "localhost" and I have not yet found a way to change the name.

All of the above, I can do a phone call, surf the net, and check email while running BOINC.
Using the "phone" for WCG in my opinion is more useful than making a call.

I have 2 WUs in for validation and 4 in progress.
Most of the WUs are SN2S Betas so it should help get the next Beta badge.

Now, how to get the wife's cell "phone" to run WCG.
Most likely she will let me run it only when it is charging.
I can live with that.

Re: "The survivors"

Pretty soon everyone will forget how to make a phone call on their cell phone. All you see today is people texting on it, they are like walking zombies, with their phone up to their faces all the time. Soon the new eyeglass phone combo PC will come out. That should really become interesting then. How many accidents is that going to cause? People will become blind in one eye.

20 hours +/- Beta time

There is a temperature limit for the battery at 40C - if it reaches that temp computation is suspended.(Not wise to change this)
Also, if the battery goes below 30% charge - computation is suspended.(User option, out of the box it is set at 60%)

Looks encouraging!

Screenshot of LG E970 running WCG on BOINC

I have a spare laptop cooler that works to keep the "phone" below 40C.

Re: "The survivors"

It is automatically named "localhost" and I have not yet found a way to change the name.

There is a discussion on this over here - yonder:

Re: Beta Testing VINA on Android Devices - July 9, 2013 - Issues Thread
Without rooting the device, the default name pulled on an android device is localhost. There is no way to change the name from localhost through the website.

Thanks,

Re: "The survivors"

There is also a firewall issue that cannot be resolved without rooting the device.
Will have to look into that further.

I have Avast Mobile Security which also provides anti theft protection.
Can't prevent the theft but it can locate the phone and track it.
Free Mobile Security

There appears to be an app for everything!
