Re: "The survivors"

All you guru's, including you grumpy, enjoy your toys and your rooting, whatever that is. I have all to do to just keep my computer running. My cell phone is just that, a cell phone. Besides I'm on the fringe of no cell service where I'm located anyway. I have to go outside and down my driveway to get one bar if I'm lucky.

Re: "The survivors"

Burno,
Rooting is allowing Root access, which can be potentially giving admin privileges to any app.
Without Rooting some device apps like firewalls cannot work.
I will most likely Root my device because I enjoy living on the edge.

nasher,
No trouble getting WUs--running 4 Betas now.
I have 23 Valid WUs with 99.25 hours of CPU time.
This Beta work is really helping towards my next badge--Silver Beta.

Re: "The survivors"

Tried an easy 2-step Rooting procedure.
1. It was not easy
2. it was more like 4-steps.
3. There were two warnings that it "needed" (SDK) files that were not loaded, there was no info on how to get them.
5. It asked for a recovery password, which I don't have and it would not let me cancel out.
4. When it eventually failed there was no info on how to get past the problem.
6. It did not Root the device

Hmmm, so it requires downloading and running software from a site you don't know.
(No big deal, right?)

And the software is translated into English (from Chinese).
(That's not important either, right?)

What's wrong with this picture?
Everything!

Re: "The survivors"

Tried a different Rooting procedure and it worked.
I now have a firewall running on my LG E970.
Have not found a way to change the hostname but have found references to an app that does not work.
Aside from that I have no idea what to do with a Rooted "phone".

Re: "The survivors"

Looks like BOINC Tasks 1.49 assigns "localhost" as the IP address of the PC running the program.
The FAQ recommends that the IP not be changed to "127.0.0.1".
I have 4 of 5 computers working.
It combines the tasks from multiple machines on one display and has some additional graphs and controls.
Not sure if the "phone" can be added.

Does anyone else use this program?

Re: "The survivors"

BOINC Tasks on my LG E970
I have 5 PCs working but have not been able to incorporate the E970 tasks.
This is a bit misleading because BOINC Tasks runs on a desk top PC and this is displaying that info on the E970 via Safari.
Between this and WCGDAWS there is a good picture of what is happening with WCG on all of my computers.
Comes in very handy when in "the oval office".

Re: "The survivors"

While there is a slow down in projects I am working on over clocking.
I have the i7 and FX-8350 running at 4.5 GHz.
Working on over clocking the 2 GPUs to get ready for the new cancer project coming this year.

if your goal is to improve run time then adding CPUs will help.
If you want to improve points and results returned then adding a qualified GPU will give amazing improvement.
I have done both.
No need to buy a high end graphics card; I have spent about $239 each and am very happy.
GTX-480 and R7870 Black Edition.
