Re: "The survivors"

one thing at a time im just haveing "FUN" this month and doing whatever i can to keep going
This should be fun!

Running BOINC is a challenge.
I have had a couple of problems this week.
Reminds me of a SNL classic:
"Well, Jane, it just goes to show you, it's always something--if it ain't one thing, it's another." - Roseanne Roseannadanna

Re: "The survivors"

I am not a fortune teller nor do I play one on TV.

But, I have a terrible feeling about OpenCoin's WCG team venture--Ripple Labs.

Using WCG as a tool to allocate crypto currency is going to be catastrophic to WCG.

It is causing a gold rush to join the RL team, which in itself is not the problem.

Making money by crunching is going to corrupt WCG.

The number of money seeking crunchers aka miners will explode and dominate WCG results.

The miners will use whatever means necessary to win crypto currency.

Use of purchased time on Amazon servers to crunch WUs will quickly deplete work for legitimate crunchers.

It may be good for WCG researchers that projects complete far ahead of schedule but when the core volunteer crunchers are experiencing no work available they will lose interest in WCG.

When no more work exists OpenCoin will pack up their tent and move elsewhere.

The gold rush will be over and the miners will leave.

They do not care that WCG is negatively affected but I do and you too should.

This is a sad day at WCG.

A possible solution is for WCG management to amend the rules to prevent crypto currency schemes from participating at WCG.

Why did they pick WCG?
You see, the whole problem with crypto currency schemes is that they need a means to allow the miners to earn the crypto currency.
Presently, BitCoin uses complicated algorithms to solve problems that require massive computation.
Massive computation requires a lot of electric power.
BitCoin miners have to eat this expense.
So, some genius [I use this term loosely] came up with the idea to use grid computing to earn crypto currency.
“Turn all that wasted CPU time and electric power into research”; it’s a great sales pitch and a good idea for the scheme but it is NOT good for the grid, the researchers, and the crunchers.
Think about it!

Well said. We will of course run out of thing to do, and the miners will be gone.

Leaving WCG with what? There are already concerns about lack of projects.

I see the altruistic cruncher moving on as well.

Re: "The survivors"

shrug people come and people go....

i just realized that i now have enough beta's to get my beta badge to gold... i remember never thinking i would get bronze let alone silver beta.

honestly if coin is the reason you are crunching then go ahead.

myself i crunch for my own reasons... and honestly if a person crunches 1 work unit for any project i am happy cause at least they are using there computer / phone for things...

Re: "The survivors"

I've gotten several BETAs recently. Most are 7.28, but i even got a repair 7.27 (2 day turnaround).

The last 7.28 WU has been running for 15+ hours,[cpu elapsed] and still has 1hr, 30 m left.

(At the speed my abacus vibrates, this is about 25 hours in real time.)

I've learned to leave 'em be.

Re: "The survivors"

In the real world a BETA tester would maybe do some computer restarts or other activity while a BETA is running.
The idea being that the tester would find any latent problems so they could be fixed before the production run.
In practice, I treat BETAs like other WUs.
I do restarts following updates, or when the need arises.
Nothing more, nothing less.

The size of the WUs is used as a tool to control server load.
It makes sense that frequent uploads, and downloads increase server load.
It also makes sense that if WU size increases they are reported less frequently and the server load decreases.
What does it matter to a server admin if it takes us a day or two to complete one WU?

Could this recent spike in server load be the result of some nefarious power crunching scheme?
Hmm, can't think of any.

Re: "The survivors"

nasher, you are probably 1 in 1,000.
I'll bet there are a lot of people on here that don't know the difference between ALPHA, BETA, and Production.
Keep up the good work.

I still have some MCM BETAs in progress and noticed that the latest production MCM WUs are 7.28.

The BETA must be going well.

Re: "The survivors"

Milestones Today
RCC_Survivor passes 15,000,000 BOINC Credits

A very reliable source pointed out on another thread that the WCG Dashboard is not being updated due to the web site changes causing problems for web scrapers.
On the dashboard the number of days of MCM1 remaining has been stuck at 704 for 11 days.
I would really like to know how much work remains.
I am running MCM1 exclusively and just picked up 27 FAAH WUs, which leads me to believe that the work is not keeping up with the demand.
