Yes, you could do the Challenges without us Base Campers
----------------------------------------- but you would not be this high up the list ![]() - but in a year from now you will be without any push from the Base Campers ![]() - nice exercise in verb usage, I think ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 14, 2011 6:52:53 AM] |

It's been a nice holiday, but all good things come to an end. I'm migrating back to my usual perch - picking the bones of tech journalism back at Vulture Central.
Au revoir! |

We are sorry to see any visitors leave, you are greatly appreciated.
----------------------------------------If you are nomadic by nature Base Camp is good place to rest. One of our new crunchers to be has not joined because her daughter is in the hospital. Family first, take your time. I would like a Beta badge. The Beta testing is scarce so I don't expect a new badge soon. ![]() ![]() Please join the team The survivors ![]() |

I met a young survivor on Twitter and she has written a book about her experience with cancer.
----------------------------------------I find her to be inspirational, here is her website http://melindamarchiano.com/ Melinda is one reason why I joined The survivors and happily donate every microsecond of idle CPU to research. The three scariest words are "you have cancer." How a person deals with that reveals a lot about them. Unfortunately, there are many that lose the battle and too many are children. I will continue crunching for a cure so that the number lost is reduced and then eliminated. Come join me in "The survivors" I am an 11 year 2x Renal Cell Carcinoma survivor. ![]() ![]() Please join the team The survivors ![]() |

I would like to point out that "The survivors" are not related to reality TV but are patients, survivors, caretakers, relatives, friends, and associates of someone that survived real illnesses such as cancer, HIV, etc... and are here crunching for a cure.
----------------------------------------10 seasons of the TV show do not come close to surviving cancer once. ![]() ![]() Please join the team The survivors ![]() |

The challenge results ranking has not changed.
----------------------------------------HFCC number 6, HCC number 7, still very respectable results for a small team. Yeah team! ![]() ![]() Please join the team The survivors ![]() |

I find her to be inspirational, here is her website http://melindamarchiano.com/ I found that inspirational as well, not least the review by Lance Armstrong, so I wrote his Lance Armstrong Foundation in Austin, Texas, thusly: Dear Sirs, Lance Armstrong is a hit in Europe not least for being a "come-back-guy". What I'm going to ask here is not money or effort, because it's free and effortless. There is an organization run by IBM called World Community Grid. It organizes the computing part of cancer research and many other things such as clean water. The research calculations designed by the scientists are broken up into little bits that are sent to the computers of volunteers all over the world. A program installed on these computers see to it that they donate their computers' surplus CPU cycles (because you normally only use a fraction of the capacity) to science. If your IT department would look into this and approve of it and you decided to join it should be such a boost to everyone of us doing this. You would be a trail blazer, because WCG is looking to get businesses and other "big IT-resources" to join. Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, is one, and if you wish, I could try to get the Marist College IT-person to contact you to share his experiences. Joining may even have a PR value for your organization. I was inspired to contact you by a link from my Team Captain on WCG in Team *The Survivors* leading to a review of a book about a young girl's battle with cancer that Lance Armstrong wrote. If you take up this Challenge and approved of running BOINC (the software developed by Berkeley University) on all your computers it would be great for all of us! Our aim is to return results to the scientists as fast as they can handle them in their end. Some links: WCG (World Community Grid): http://worldcommunitygrid.org BOINC software: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ I so look forward to hearing from you, Anne-Lise S [real name and address....] Denmark P.S. I have met Alberto Contador and have his autograph, but he's just racing well without being a Survivor .... |
