Re: Windows 10 login

Now a few years ago, had install issues, called some number in Milano, and was complete computer guided through the re-activation process. In effect, the license did transfer... phew I went.

(Was W7 btw)

You were fortunate and I am sure they inquired if that specific copy of the OS was already installed on another computer.

Another reason you may NOT want to upgrade
Windows 10 silently uses your bandwidth to send updates to others

Even though you can constrain it to your own LAN or just turn it off confused

Re: Windows 10 login

I installed W10 on my desktop. Didn't like it very much, slower than Linux and W7. It was a clean install.
I'll keep it on my tablet.

I know but it just makes me wonder what may be going on in the background that the end user has no control over.

I ran the betas up to the RC and found it was slower than 7 too. Saw no compelling feature(s) to update. Not even for free. ( Call me paranoid but MS offering something for free also makes me suspicious. whistling )

Re: Windows 10 login

I installed W10 over a W7 Home Premium. Had a lot of fun playing with it, but printer, scanner, copiers had no drivers that were compatible. Used MS program to revert back to W7, sign said this will only take a short while. It went into an infinity type loop, and would flash on the screen, reboot and say it is fine.
Checked around with others and many had the same problem. One fellow let his lappy churn away for 2 hours to see if it would do anything different I tried booting with a disk after changing order in BIOS. The only disc I could get to boot was gparted so I wiped the drive and fresh install of W7.

Beware all is not well

Re: Windows 10 login

The Windows 10 Beta/Preview worked ok starting with my first install driver (...0067) until I (tried to) installed driver ...20??). the laptop froze during the install process. I waited for the official release but things just got worse. Anyway while waiting for the 29th I tried to go back to my Ubuntu 14.04 LTS but not nor could I reinstall 14.04. I tried Ubuntu 15 with fixes for boot problems That didn't work either. The official w10 download did not help either. So I installed the latest Ubuntu 14.04 LTS after formatting all OS partitions & WCG runs again.
FWIW

Re: Windows 10 login

@nanoprobe,

Well, they do collect tons of info on you... and force you to update and you can't even uninstall certain apps. Not good at all...

Edge may be faster than other browsers but it also has no extensions, no sync, no nothing.

W10, aside from a new start menu, DX12 and Edge, is no more than W7 or W8.1. My opinion. I kept it for 3 days on my desktop till I got tired of it.

Re: Windows 10 login

The torrent/emule type of distribution does not bother me, more so because the link that was attached was on full read much less alarming than the post suggested... yes they're not up-front, but are they ever ;? (Have been re-distring for Ubuntu since years, so what's new... you get your packages/patches delivered in multithreaded mode, thus much faster). The ISP does not care since one way or the other, that traffic will pass. Anyway, tick 'metered' and you're off the re-share system.

Am though getting more and more concerned over things such as the biometrics hardware no longer working... fingerprint scanning to log in and other special drivers that had already to be hacked into W7 to get the bluetooth printer [BT v.2.0] to work. It's like the free SkyTV HD On demand box we got 'for free' for being a subscriber of 10+ years. The price was, there was only an ethernet plug as the 'free' was really made in 2011, first generation, unsellable warehouse stock. So they made cheap points with their customers. Had to go out and get a pricy Netgear wireless adapter that plugs into the Ethernet port, as a 20M cable would be intolerable. After that, we're actually really really pleased... watch a program, film, series, when it suits us... missed the start, fetch it from the intertubes. The TiVo box arrived here 20 years after it became popular in the USA, but over satellite (And the remote control looks suspiciously like the TiVo version), albeit, first generation laughing

In short, some other print from MS basically says "you get it, but it may only work in full on new hardware" (thusly not doing more than W7 already does on the hardware you have). And Edge being new, of course there's no add-ons, but has there ever been an add-on ecosystem for IE?

Will trial on the multi-boot, when I'm ready.

Re: Windows 10 login

What I meant with Edge and the addons was that it has no current support for any thus it will of course be fast. Firefox is fast too without addons. Not so much with some.
