Re: Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

I upgraded my main computer to Windows 10 this morning without any problems. WCG and Poem@Home (GPU project) are both humming along. The default screen is the desktop so it looks remarkably like Windows 7. Teamviewer connects to my other computers faster and screen sizing within Teamviewer works much better. As you can see I have only checked WCG related functions. But that's the main thing, right?

There's more coming out the wood works... you can't escape MS, you're paying to them anyway, even through your Now-Connect! fridge. laughing

Will wait very patiently until a device is offered the upgrade [Italian updates are always days and days later, never on patch Tuesday]. Then will wait a week or so for the drudge reports to come in and anticipate any never-anticipated pitfalls.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

I'm going to create an up-to-date image of my hard drive before I install Windows 10, so if I don't like it I can go back to the way things were without too much trouble.

Windows 10 login

W10 gently insists you use a cloud login, like Outlook or Live instead of your standard NT based PC login password.

I'm about to buy a new machine and am considering whether pay the Windows tax or go for a clean machine. If W10 insists that I create a M$ account in order to use it then I won't touch it.

What are people's experiences in this regard, please.

A Microsoft account is not required on Windows 10.

Snip "...like Outlook or Live..."... told you so, they and their buddies in Meade Maryland want to know what's in your fridge [Wild Turkey with a RFID chip in the cap tells them when you (ab)used the bottle ;P]

Still using Thunderbird with some super add-ins like QuickFolders which allows you to drag and drop mail onto tabs of most frequently referenced mail sets.

Baldnerd link duly bookmark in W10 shortcut folder for reference :P

Re: Windows 10 login

I'm updating to W10 on my tablet right now from W8.1.
Shame it will probably be 32-bit version (CPU is 64-bit).

AFAIK, no MS account is needed. I wouldn't upgrade if it were.

Re: Windows 10 login

Just for the heck of it hit Windows Update button and low and behold a 2,712.6MB download is sitting ready to catch. 2.7GB. I'll do it when 'I' is ready. :D

(The More Info link does not respond, nothing happens here... maybe they don't want you to know about the pitfalls before hitting 'Get Started' confused )

Re: Windows 10 login

This was an important question to me... if loosing installed software such as Office 10+13 which is on this machine: http://www.intowindows.com/you-can-upgrade-to...osing-installed-programs/ Regrettably no defenitive answer, just 'most apps' retained. Those still on Vista are buggered.
