Re: Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

The W10 builds keep coming in. It's stable and fast and the 'charms' bar has been vaporised. Some say that this is good. :-)

Multiple desktops are a big bonus.

Also W10 is running well with antiques like Office 2007, and a version of Encyclopedia Britannica from XP days. No fiddling around, they 'just worked.'

There's a lot of pleas from testers for Aero-glass and rounded corners; we can hope.

This is running on El Cheapo Intel G3258 CPU and is fast and fluid. Window Snap feature positions open windows around desktop.

W7 users will be able to work W10 straight out of the box (or USB stick.) Start menu can be a complex or as simple as you like, log-in changes from old NT style to Windows Live cloud login so everything syncs. Active directory people might hate it.

So far: W10 is a fast place to be.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

So happens to have watched a "How to delouse a Windows system with SysInternals´ Process Explorer´ and Process Monitor", a sit of 89 minutes. They mentioned multiple desktops [a Ubuntu standard since long] with one of the SI tools called 'Desktops', which was used to create additional 'sandboxed' desktops to be able to remove malware. As it is, some malware will kill decontamination tools to include the PE/PM of SI when opened in primary desktop. A review: http://www.howtogeek.com/195962/unlock-virtua...with-this-microsoft-tool/

Got a mail to say the reservation will start to download the W10 package, on [or after] July 29. Probably they'll stage in a controlled way not to buckle they servers laughing

Edit: Just tested SI's 'Desktops', configing keys Alt+Shft+ 1/2/3/4 and it works a treat... reminds me of another VD tool used in yonder days and long forgotten. cool

Re: Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

Hello all,

Does anyone know how much or if Windows will start charging for a subscription fee with their new Windows 10? Apologize if the question is redundant, but I did not find an answer in this thread.

I heard rumors since windows won't be releasing new "windows versions" and will instead just update this windows 10 version then they would have to make up the money by charging a subscription fee (maybe a yearly fee) for using Windows 10.

Thank you for your help :)

At the moment W10 OS is a free lifetime upgrade on selected machines to be followed by retail boxed versions and OEM installs.

If users decline the upgrade, then the transfer to W10 at some point in the future becomes a retail boxed OS or OEM install with a new machine. 'At the moment' there's no hint of a subscription channel for the OS.

There are subs for OneDrive and Office365 as you probably know. The drive for W10 is one account across all devices, to the extant that W10 gently insists you use a cloud login, like Outlook or Live instead of your standard NT based PC login password.

[This is at the current date, from W10 10074 preview. It can change.]

More important than any other factor: Winamp can still whip the llama's *** in W10.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

Thanks for the update Hardnews. I am hoping that it will stay free and Microsoft will make money through some other means on its OS other than subscription, however if they try that I think a lot more people will be more open to trying out Linux on their desktops or laptops.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

Windows 10 gets... 10 year support: http://betanews.com/2015/07/17/microsoft-conf...least-ten-years-for-free/

On to stick with the number, 10 more days [officially 9] before the final build 10.0 is release and the web will turn to a temporary crawl [worst scenario, but not with all that traffic shaping]. My main working machine is set to fetch it when it's gets notice... going to watch the news first on blue screen experiences. devilish

Re: Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

Lol de Lol, and of course, a mail fulling meeting expectation:
We want to give every customer a great upgrade experience, so we’re rolling it out in an organized way to manage high demand and to make sure that the upgrade is right for your device. After July 29, when Windows 10 is ready for your device, it will download in the background. You’ll then get a notification to schedule your upgrade right away or at another time that’s convenient for you.

Here are some common questions about the upgrade process. Click on the links for answers.

In other words, if they've got work to do regarding my device [which they tested and inventoried whenever registering for the upgrade], W10 may be longer away than suggested before.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

One of my crunchers is currently running Windows 10 TH1 10240 which is apparently the RTM version that is going to be released on July 29th. Boinc is running just fine so far. praying

Re: Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

Did anyone that is using Win 10 got a chance to use that new "Spartan" browser that was supposed to replace IE? Wonder how it performs vs Firefox and Chrome.

I haven't done any speed comparisons, but the browser is now called Microsoft Edge. Spartan was apparently just a working title.
