Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

Microsoft has announced that its next operating system will be offered as a free upgrade to owners of devices running Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Phone.

The announcement marks a change in strategy to its previous policy of charging for major updates.

The offer, which is limited to the OS's first year of release, may aid its adoption.

That could help avoid a repeat of the relatively slow uptake of Windows 8.

I'll take my 8s to 10 in a heartbeat.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

Windows 8 reminds me of the rush to "upgrade" from ME to 98.

However bad 10 might be, it will be light years ahead of 8.

Re: Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

Seems that if you upgrade in the first year from 8.1 it remains free and fully supported......

Microsoft's Terry Myerson said: "Windows 10 will support the the broadest device family ever. Since September we've received a lot of feedback ... feedback is shaping the future of Windows.

"For the first year after Windows 10 is available, we will be making available a free upgrade to Windows 10 for all devices running Windows 8.1. Once a device is upgraded to Windows 10, we'll be keeping it current for the supported lifetime for the device.

"Windows 10 is so much more than the latest version of Windows. Windows 10 changes the rules of the game."

The new software has reintroduced the famous "Start" menu that was removed from Windows 8. It can now be shifted between the traditional smaller and full screen view.

There are quite a few articles on windoze ten from ElReg. Look in the software section if you want to see them close together.

Nope...it runs fast enough...but can't get you more GFLOPs from CPU...only another CPU can! cool

my Q is about stability...

Re: Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

Whatever the interface bashing of Windows 8, gamers I know tell me time and again that 8.1 gives better performance than Windows 7. Went to look and tests confirm this such as at HardOcp: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2013/11/24/bat...nce_review/5#.VMtrhS4pIVA and set the GUI in such a way that the tiles view hardly shows, just the almost Ol' startbar, which in full feature comes back in 10, I'm told, with tiles of open apps in the menu. So what?

With regard performance and UGM1, got 8 concurrent running with latest 'classic' HD storage tweaks and having well over 99% efficiency, which before deteriorated fast if running more than 4. We're still eager to get to beta test a UGM1 version that does not do the intermediate writing every few seconds, adhering to the 'Write to disk at most' setting. If that comes maybe we'll get just under 100% efficiency just as with MCM1 on a 'crunch only' device :0]
