Thanks everyone for reply to my earlier inquiry. Just one more question, once I get the message that I can update to Win10 do we have a certain number of months or time to decide?
----------------------------------------I thought you had a year to decide before upgrading, so at least I might be able to wait out all the issues until to the last day and then upgrade and avoid some of the things the other members on this thread saw. ![]() |

So far, every time I log in [finger swipe], the W10 upgrade offer appears on the work machine... session locks, log in, again and again. On the second machine just killed it, and now it sits as a feature in the second 'optionals' screen i.e. can continue updating W7/8 and just ignore that W10 line, for like noted the next 12 months, minus 8 days.

@nanoprobe, Well, they do collect tons of info on you... and force you to update and you can't even uninstall certain apps. Not good at all... Edge may be faster than other browsers but it also has no extensions, no sync, no nothing. W10, aside from a new start menu, DX12 and Edge, is no more than W7 or W8.1. My opinion. I kept it for 3 days on my desktop till I got tired of it. It keeps getting better. Windows 10 Starts Charging For Missing Features Now Windows 10 has launched, Microsoft is starting to fill in the blanks regarding features removed from Windows 7 and Windows 8 and it doesn’t make for pleasant reading. Why? Because behind this free upgrade are the first signs of where Microsoft will start charging users and it begins at the very bottom So much for everyone's' free update. Why am I not surprised.

Anyone having trouble running the BOINC Screensaver, specifically the WCG one? A member wrote in at BOINC forums indicating he'd no problem seeing the graphs in pre-view, but can't seem to get it working when the screensaver kicks in. [BOINC 7.4.42 x86_64

[BOINC 7.4.42 x86_64 One helper comment was that W10 came without OpenGL installed, which is a per-requisite to seeing the BOINC graphics. I normally don't run with a screensaver, but I activated it (WCG) and it worked okay. Win10, 7.4.27 x86_64. I don't know much about OpenGL but a search revealed a plethora of files with opengl in the names (and not just in C:\Windows.old). |

Maybe, probably, possibly, likely, a real chance, when you upgraded over previous Windows install, W10 was scripted enough to then also install OpenGL drivers [if clean install is really coming without it].
Thx for checking. (Searches these days get ever poorer in exactness, more and more none answers with add-revenue at top, could not find the immediate denial it being not included... if preview worked, then that already uses OpenGL FAIU. Another thing I have heard is that a clean install from a MS downloaded ISO will provide only generic drivers, and some days may elapse before Windows Upgrade will provide the specific ones required for the specific system. Doing an upgrade using the "Get Windows 10" icon will supply all the latest drivers from the system's equipment manufacturers. After completing the upgrade you are provided the option to remove all data and refresh Win10 thereby providing the equivalent of a clean install but with the correct drivers. |

Next Device;
----------------------------------------Be sure and find out what Ethernet device you have installed. After installing W10, it would not, or could not recognize Gigabit PCI Express TG-3468. Internet service was disconnected, and with much ado, shut down and change to a NA that will be recognized. The embedded Lan in the MSI Board could not be read by W10 but the 2nd hard drive Linux Mint would connect with either of the RJ4 sockets. Hope this saves someone from going through this ordeal. ![]() |

Until MS becomes more transparent, I'm not going to upgrade. Remember that 'free lunch' saying...
For those who are concerned about what is being shared, enter "Windows 10" +"opt out" into a search engine of your choice and just see what pops up. There are multiple articles to help give you a "sense" of privacy. [off topic] How many generations away are we from George Orwell's 1984? |
