Re: Work Available

And since, at the moment, only Extreme workunits are being addressed, which is good, only a small subset of workunits is available. Today there were probably only some 2500 workunits being distributed (or less, since lots of tasks aren't being returned within a day).
Since Extreme workunits are being distributed in triplets — each workunit goes out as 3 tasks to different member clients — some 7500 tasks could have been released today. The faster they get returned by us, the more tasks will daily be available to us.

Re: Work Available

None of mine failed, and none of their pairs have failed. Of three copies of twelve, only one has yet to return a result. Thirty five out of thirty six.

The back-end technology didn't break since the repairs. The old system struggled at twenty thousand work units a day. That should be the next number we test.

Re: Work Available

I have 2 machines with Intel 3770-i7 (4C-8T) set to download a cache of 8 ARP each and crunch only 4 each at a time to keep the elapsed times down to 24 hours.

These are replenished regularly.

I am struggling to make the deadlines with only 36 hour units. but have only missed a couple of deadlines and they were only by small amounts.

I note that there are some units available with 3 day deadlines. A few of them would help.

Of course I don't want to reprimand you, Mike, but devilish … here it comes biggrin … missing the deadline would mean that another copy is sent out to someone else and in many cases that other task will run to completion (IMHO, unnecessarily) while yours also will have finished long before that. Computer cycles that could have been spent much wiser. cool Sorry for repeating what you already should know.

I quite agree but I only just missed by minutes which was difficult to forecast and that might have been before the re-send went out. However, would definitely have been before the re-send reached a checkpoint so should have been recalled.

Re: Work Available

As we have just restarted, I would remind crunchers and warn new ones that ARP is not recommended for anyone who doesn't crunch 24/7.

There are 2 reasons for that. The first is that the units take much longer to crunch - 8 to 27 hours according to your machine. The second is that they only checkpoint every 12.5% so a lot of crunching gets lost on shut down.

It is also worth bearing in mind that they are heavy users of RAM, especially at checkpoint time. Unless you have a fast machine with a lot of RAM, it is best to restrict ARP to half of your threads or the units will take longer to crunch. That can be done using app_config and MCM can be crunched on the rest of your threads.

To your and Adri's post: Keep in mind that with the current replication of 3 tasks in 1 workunit,
a resend is only sent when 2 of the initials are beyond the deadline.

Message received Mike.

Such a shame I have goals I will not be able to achieve even though I have adequate RAM & CPU. Even though I complete work before the deadline is due. Since I do not run 24/7. I will no longer processed this project. What a loss for the project scientists :-( :-(
