While I am grateful it seems to be running again, the fact that the project can stop and then days later restart without any comment from the people who're supposed to be running it, doesn't really inspire confidence. The fact that I'm not surprised by this situation is even more telling.

I am getting WUs on my Linux machine. I'm not at home to hit "update" to see if my Windows machine also has work available. Simple solultion (that is, when you've got access to your Windows machine(s)), create a simple .bat file with the following two lines in it, then schedule a regular task up to run it on an hourly basis (or however frequent you want it). cd "C:\Program Files\BOINC" boinccmd --project http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org update I've got mine set up on all three of my machines - and it works a treat ![]() Thanks. I will give that a go. In the meantime, I have made my queue larger. Hopefully my machines can keep running over a weekend outage now. I had a short queue because I wanted my machines to frequently check for HSTB tasks, but that isn't relevant at the moment. |

Just in case you need to cache some backup, Denis@Home has about 100,000 units available. Get 'em while they're hot. Like Sgt Joe, Denis is one of my favorite "Backup Projects" for when WCG WU's are running shallow. Unfortunately, Denis comes in spurts too so Asteroids is another I keep on-hand -- computing the size/shape of those orbital rocks that might annihilate the planet seems like a good use of resources too ![]() Glad to have WCG back on-the-air... Universe is my back-up back-up. always work... but useless work.
still better than the biggest semi-prime only divisible by 1 and itself written backwards... |

Well, looks as if my careful optimism last night that someone was just a bit late to fill the hoppers with new WUs in time for the weekend was a bit premature. By this morning, all hosts that I checked have run down their (default) cache significantly and it seems as if we are in fact running dry, again, by mid afternoon (PST)...

Can I ask what version of BOINC people are using that are experiencing a shortage of work? I am just curious if there is any correlation. It seems some people are not having any issues and I am curious.

Interesting. Is anyone that is using Linux/Ubuntu having issues with a shortage? I have three Ubuntu systems and they are not really having issues. The Windows systems are (both 10 and 11).

Back on 12th September Sgt. Joe posted in another forum about shutting down Linux rigs because they were running dry[*1]. I think some of the other users posting about lack of work also have Linux rigs, but can't be sure.
I wonder if the "common ground" wasn't BOINC version or O/S but the nature of the requests being made? Smaller systems with smaller queues (and/or WCG device profiles limiting concurrent tasks) will probably ask for fewer tasks (and more often); the pattern of work distribution seemed to suggest precedence being given to users with smaller requests, and I believe that's a possible configuration option :-) -- it would be a fairly brutal way of trying to stop a few users snatching up far more work than they could process, but it would also impinge on more normal users who happen to have lots of cores or [say] a three day queue. Just a thought... Cheers - Al. [*1] A subsequent post elsewhere suggests that he'd turned those rigs back on and they were getting better work flow. |
