Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I just surpassed a major milestone, 1/2 billion accumulated points. Good timing considering the end of the gpu project is near and summer (a.k.a. expensive crunching season) is almost upon us.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I had been watching a large hawk-like bird for a couple of days and finally discovered it was nesting in the cell phone tower just to the south of my place. I thought maybe it was a peregrine falcon nest, but the birds (I eventually saw the second one) were too big. They had a whitish underside and a very long wingspan, but the wings were narrower than an eagle's wing. Finally, today, I saw one of them land on top of a telephone pole and start eating something. When I got close enough I looked through binoculars and saw it was eating what appeared to be a goldfish about 7-8 inches(16.5-18cm) long. I thought maybe it had grabbed a koi from somebody's pond. This time I really got a good look at the bird. Turns out it is a nesting pair of ospreys. Black on the top and white on the bottom. Probably at least a 5 foot 1(1.5 meter) wingspan. It should be interesting seeing them and their brood. Eventually I hope to get a good picture of them.
Cheers

Congratulations. It looks like you have run out of GPU work, because your daily point total is dropping off.

I reached over 1 billion points, a lot of it due to the GPU processing. I also have started to drop off in daily points. I was doing over 3.5 Million per day with full GPU processing, I expect that to drop off significantly.

I am not sure when GPU processing started, but I bet half of my total was due to GPU processing, and I have been a WCG member since 2005.

Lets hope they offer GPU processing again, in the near future!

The ability to offer gpu processing is dependent on a number of factors such as programming expertise, availability of programmers, and structure of the project i.e. is the project highly parallel. Let's hope they build on the success of HCC and promote the power of gpu.
I just converted on of my server boxes(2X Xeon 5320) from 32 bit linux to 64 bit linux. I tried for three days to do this over a wireless connection and will never try that again. I finally broke down and brought that machine into the house and used an ethernet connection. Then it only took an hour and a half to do the OS install and and all the updates and install BOINC. With the wireless it would constantly time out on the downloads and I would have to start all over. Once the machine is fully updated the wireless seems to work much more consistently. It would be nice if it had worked out of the box so to speak, but I learned the hard way.
With HCC ending I will set this one to doing the vina projects. (It looks like HFCC is not going to be ready for a while.) The 64 bit version seems about 50% to 75% faster than the 32 bit version. It had been running about 18-19 points per hour per core and with the 64 bit version it should run 30+ points per hour per core. That will be a significant increase in throughput. I should know in a couple of days. This is where Piroque's program WCGDAWS comes in very handy.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

The 64 bit linux has preliminarily resulted in about a 10 point difference in points per hour per core. This would be about a 37% increase in efficiency. The average time per WU is also down by a little better than an hour. I will know more in a few more days.

I spent the last couple of days replacing some of the baseboard and drip cap at the bottom of my siding in the northwest corner of my house. All of the snow had stayed so long it had really accelerated the rotting process. I know the boards were at least 45 to 50 years old already so I guess it was time. Eventually I will have to replace the rest also, just not this year. At least the weather has been nice so I can get going on all of the spring cleanup chores.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Just a suggestion Sgt. Joe, you might try downloading a copy of the 64 bit Linux distro you are using and burning it to DVD after doing a md5 check. Or you could buy a copy from On-Disk in Michigan. I did that with the Linux 14 Mint Cinnamon version and its been a breeze to set up. I don't think it took me even 45 minutes to install on my HP workstation and put BOINC and WCG on.

I have seen about a 1-1.5 hour decrease in the time it took Linux 64 bit machine to process the GFAM, SNS, and DFSL WU's. CEP I see about an hour decrease too.
