Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Interesting thing is the 4930k is more expensive by about $200 than the i7-5820k. I guess Intel is subsidizing the price of the DDR4 by bringing the 6 core cpu prices down.

Not a bad deal, but I don't have much expendable income at the moment.

I don't either or I would have that 8 core crunching now. The 5820k is pretty cheap for a hex. I need to win the lottery so I can build a dual xeon 18 core/36 threaded monster! 72 threads on one machine crunching would be friggin awesome.

I can only dream tongue

Cheers

There seems to be a steady supply of them now., so it should not take you too long to advance up the badge ladder. From my personal experience, they crunch much quicker on Linux than Windows. I have not done too many, just enough to get the first badge, I will keep them in the mix, but most of my resources will continue to be on the cancer project. I can say the points yield on any Vina project is about twice what I would get on anything else with Linux. Crunch on.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I've been crunching continuously but haven't been on these forums much for some time. I'm glad to see that all of you regulars are still here!

Had a bit of a health scare of my own a couple of weeks ago when, on a Sun. morning when I wasn't doing much of anything, crushing chest pain came on and I felt worse than I've ever felt in my life. My husband was home and I asked him to call the paramedics. I was told in the ambulance and again in the emergency room the EKGs showed I was having a heart attack. However, the cardiac catheterization showed that my arteries are perfectly clear. The doctors figure one of the coronary arteries went into a spasm and deprived my heart of blood. That would also explain several much milder episodes I had in the past. I'm now on three meds to reduce the chance of future spasms. I was very lucky that this was sorted out before I sustained any permanent heart damage or worse. And, having benefited from great medical care, I am so happy that my computers are crunching away and trying to give back.

It is so good to hear from you again. Sorry to hear you had some health problems, but glad to hear you have them under control. That definitely sounds like it was a scary time for you. All the best to you and yours that this does not recur.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Glad to hear your doing good Kate. Makes you appreciate life more when medical issues crop up on a persons health. Never heard of an artery having a spasm before. Stay in contact when you can.

Silver...Going slow on OET because I am still working on a Diamond (20) on UCM. Once I reach 20 maybe I will concentrate on OET.

What OS are you using ? From the OET1 units I have done, I will say Linux is much more efficient than Windows. In fact I am quite astounded at the point yield I've seen, up to 60 BOINC points per hour on an older 2.66ghz Core2Duo. This is even higher than the Vina units from FAAH. So far the run times have varied from about 30 minutes to about 8 hours. I always have to try out the new projects, but the bulk of my resources will remain on MCM1. Crunch on.
Cheers
