Re: Minnesota Crunchers

'Tis the roller coaster ride of OET points distribution. Just making up for all those lost points of the previous few days...

02/17/2015 | 0:063:13:18:37 | 579,705
02/16/2015 | 0:066:16:30:38 | 204,595
02/15/2015 | 0:060:18:18:41 | 73,090
02/14/2015 | 0:059:04:08:46 | 135,801
02/13/2015 | 0:068:10:10:27 | 279,879
02/12/2015 | 0:061:09:30:07 | 406,865
02/11/2015 | 0:065:21:14:15 | 335,238

Notice the run time hasn't changed much (about 60 days/day) but the points are all over the place.

Perhaps after the project gets its sea legs, it will stabilize.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Snagged a silver on OET today, should have Gold by tomorrow or the next day.

Silver...Going slow on OET because I am still working on a Diamond (20) on UCM. Once I reach 20 maybe I will concentrate on OET.

What OS are you using ? From the OET1 units I have done, I will say Linux is much more efficient than Windows. In fact I am quite astounded at the point yield I've seen, up to 60 BOINC points per hour on an older 2.66ghz Core2Duo. This is even higher than the Vina units from FAAH. So far the run times have varied from about 30 minutes to about 8 hours. I always have to try out the new projects, but the bulk of my resources will remain on MCM1. Crunch on.
Cheers

I have 19 machines with a Variety of Operating systems including Windows XP. Windows Vista, Window 7, Windows 8 and UBUNTU Linux. The machines are on both INTEL and AMD platforms.

I am currently working on OET as I only have a Gold and I want to get a Diamond. Also working on UCM which is at Diamond 19 years and want to get to 20 years. Once I get 20 years on UCM, everything will go to OET. I already have 100 years on MCM and FAAH so I am not contributing to them anymore.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

That is an interesting list. I see you still have a Q6600 running with Vista. I ,too, have one like that. Not the fastest machine, but it runs steady. I bought it as a used box and run it stock. I started one of my servers on just a flash drive back in November because it came with no drives and it still seems to be running fine. Uses less electricity too because of the no hard drives. biggrin

That is one of my slower machines, but for some reason my I7 920 running Linux is slower. I have never figured out why the I7 920 is so slow, I would expect it to be faster than the 6600.

I have been racking my brain ever since you posted this and for the life of me, I can not come up with a plausible reason why the I7 920 would be slower than the Q6600. There has to be something wrong with the 920. Does it throttle itself back from too much heat or is there a setting someplace which is set wrong ? That really should not be.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

That 920 should be smoking that Q6600. Just doesn't make sense.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I thought I would look at a comparison of two of my servers, both with two Xeon 5320 Clovertowns. One has hard drives in it and the other is running off of a flash drive. They are both running MCM1. The one running the flash drive is getting about .03 more points per hour than the one with the hard drives. 18.011236 to 17.980022 for a difference of 0.031214. I would say that is real close to a dead heat. I will have to put my Kill-o-watt meter on them the next time I do a shut down just see what the difference in electric use might be.
Cheers

Might not want to do that. Once you see how much those chips suck up the juice, you might want to unplug it. wink
