Re: Minnesota Crunchers

That just plain sucks! You can't get cable or DSL out there?

BTW, pulled my big rig off our account in support for movieman. His cancer has spread pretty bad. Folks over at xtremesystems put most of there rigs under his account.

No cable and I am out too far for DSL or so I have been told.

Cheers

Most cellular companies like T-mobile/AT&T/Verizon have data only plans if they have coverage for your area. I suppose the price would probably be a bit higher than your paying now most likely though.

I applaud your efforts for Movieman.

Joe, how's the ISP search going?

Not as well as I would have hoped, but it could be worse. It looks like I will be going with DSL with Century Link. I found out there is another wireless carrier just to south of me, but their coverage ends about mile south. Midcontinent's fiber is about 2 miles away. The other wireless carrier that serves my area has gotten bad reviews, a couple of people I used to work with have it and are not happy. So far, when talking with Century Link they say they can serve my area. I am waiting to pull the trigger because I am too busy to mess with it right now and I still have 6 months to make a decision.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I have DSL Century link in the twin cities...currently on a promotion 30 bucks for 12mb download, 896k upload. Tried to increase my upload rate they said they are bandwidth restricted thats all they can give me. All my devices slow down when a computer is uploading a CEP2 workunit that's why I tried to upgrade. Otherwise its pretty good.

The maximum rate I can get here is 7mb down and 768kb up. Did you buy your modem or are you leasing it ?

Thats a little bit better than what I have with frontier. Sucks! High speed my butt. I keep hitting up frontier about fiber but said only big cities get that. Saw someone laying that stuff down county rd 75 last year which is about 2 blocks from me. Wish I could tap into that.

On another note, you guys ever run large amounts of CEP units at once? Once I hit 5 yrs with ebola, was thinking of crunching 12 units on my dually so I can get my 5 yr on that. Just bumped it up to 6 to see what happens.

I bought one maybe 5 years ago, an actiontek PK5000. Wouln't recommend it as it doesn't multitask very well at all (upload and downloads at same time). Maybe just rent one until you know it works good for sure.

I ran 8 CEP2 on an i7 and 32 on an AMD server before successfully, both using SSD's. Not sure how many you can realistically run on a spinner HD.

You can probably do it OK, but the application is very heavy on I/O on your disk, specially at startup. You would not want to start all 12 units at the same time or you will bring your disk to its knees. Sekerob recommends a staggered starting scheme. I would ramp it up one core at a time to see how it performs.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I use a ram disk so boinc is on a ssd and data is in the ram disk. Now the dually is dual hex w/hyper threading. Better to disable HT or leave it. Since they are not true cores, wouldn't think it would be a good idea to run 23 of the monsters. I always leave 1 thread open for OS. My single hex gaming rig will get 6 CEP too. Am thinking by leaving the HT open, should benefit the real cores.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

It must be time to reboot most of my machines. With no WU's available now is time to shut down and give them a rest. No use letting them run doing nothing. I will check in the morning to see if any flow has started again. I did just get an MCM repair unit, but that will run out by morning. That is the machine I will leave on. I suggest we all take a breather and hope they get this fixed.

Kind of bugs me, but I just tell myself to relax and go to bed. We'll just have to hit 'em hard when they come back.

Cheers
