Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I had to do a little repair work on a server today. On the server running on the flash drive I had gotten 5 of the new beta units. They ran fine for about 8 hours and then all errored out. I suspect that the flash drive gave up the ghost. It had been running almost nonstop for about 9 months strictly on MCM1 problem free. It may have been stressed enough by the beta units to quit or maybe it was just a coincidence it quit during the betas. I tried my best to resurrect it, but to no avail. I sprung for another $5.99 and bought another drive. I installed Linux on it, plugged it into the server and fired it up. Linux booted fine and I downloaded BOINC, attached to WCG and we were off and running once again. I know there is a limited amount of read/write cycles on the flash drives, I think I save enough in electricity to justify the cost of the drives. If I get at least 6 months out of them I think I will be money ahead.

Just gorgeous weather the last two days. I am going to start harvesting the early potatoes tomorrow. The vines are really starting to wither. The later potatoes have vines that are still green and vigorous. Those will wait until September.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

You should hunt down a cheap 30gb ssd. Has to last longer than those flash drives.

Weather is awesome since last storm came through. Wife's garden is blooming great. Had some tomatos, green beans and lettuce already.

+1

The flash drives aren't made for continuous read/write. SSD's are. I use nothing but SSD's nowadays.

I dug my first new crop potatoes yesterday as was well pleased. One plant = three baseball sized and one softball sized potato. that is enough for 1 1/2 meals. The garden looks great and the deer think so too. Chased 4 of them out in broad daylight. They have started to eat the zucchini, the tomatoes, and some squash. I have never had this much problem with the deer. Here is a picture of one under one of my apple trees.

This particular server uses 2.5 in drives. I don't have any of those lying around like the 3.5 in drives of which I have several spares. I know the flash drives are not made for continuous read/write, but they are cheap enough and last long enough so I don't worry too much about them. If nothing else they are cheap to run. The servers I have are getting a little long in the tooth, so I will try to upgrade them as I run across any good deals.

Cheers

Congrats on that. That badge is one of the harder ones to earn.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Eats the resources even with reduced number crunched. 5 yrs was enough on that project. Be nice if another new project would emerge.

Yeah, that is why they made it an opt in project. It will be interesting to see how they board that new BEDAM project for FAAH. According to the first Beta, they were lengthy, but not very resource intensive. Wonder if they will keep the same badge or give BEDAM its own badge. MCM1 looks to end in the first part of October, but of course the scientists could add more items to their project, but they are not saying much lately, so who knows. It is nice to have a variety of projects from which to choose.

Blasted deer ate six of my squash. Not happy about that. Did see a 6 point buck eating apples under the tree in that same location as the previous picture. Tried to get a picture of him, but he took off pretty quick.

Cheers

Fired up my efficient 32 thread Opteron cruncher again. Was gonna wait till the end of summer but got impatient. Currently working on the cancer project until the presumably new project comes out.
