Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

I went to a church school, 11-16. Not because our family was religious, but because it was NOT the usual secondary school kids from my primary school went too. My mother is a frightful snob, so not going with the others, ie. my friends, to the usual school was /better/. Educationally, it was not better, but at the time in England, the education systems was under ANOTHER reorganisation and the old fashioned O level qualifications were to be replaced with the newer CSE certificates. Of course, the higher level A levels remained, and if you were to read for those, it was assumed you had at least the lower O level. It caused me all kinds of trouble, and I found my self doing a few O levels alongside A levels at sixth form college, but I got through, it took me an extra year, but good A levels got me into uni.

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

Hi Base Campers!
I have read a few posts here and there in your thread, trying to figure out the trek idea - it's a really neat concept!

I'm hoping to give continuation to The International Team after Jean-Pierre. First and foremost I need to find some breathing room from a lot of stuff so that I can actually become more active on the forums here.

Just wanted to say hi in the meantime! :3

Good evening flodisar, welcome.
This was a very nice greeting, Fossaw. applause
acpartsman is very good at that, too.
flodisar - as you may have picked up, Fossaw - will be our host captain when he has brought his ship in order
- which means that he has formally been granted the title of captain of The International Team.

The Bristish/English class distinctions have influenced your mother quite a bit, it seems.
In English books you often meet this phenomenon, which is a bit foreign.
Which impression has the TV-series 'Keeping up Appearances' made on you?
I take it that there is some truth to it upon which the exaggerations build.
I loved those programs, the best being those where
Mrs Hyacinth landed herself in impossibly embarrassing situations.

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

I certainly recall seeing a couple of episodes, her husband seemed to steal the show, she was awful. One of my personal favourite comedy shows was Yes Minister and later Yes Prime Minister. Political satire, I have no idea if these programs were ever exported however, I don't think many foreigners would really get the things they talked about, you'd probably need to be British. The interplay between Jim Hacker and Sir Humphrey Appleby is classic.

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

'Yes Minister' and 'Yes Prime Minister' ran on Danish TV. They were among our favorites
along with 'Keeping up Appearances', 'Faulty Towers', and 'Monty Python's Flying Circus'.
I don't know how your experience with British versus Danish humour is. You must have a good insight into of both.
I find that the two of them swing immensely well together and the disrespectful US variety as well.
In my experience Swedish humour is more foreign - strangely enough.
My dentist worked for two years in Sweden and her jokes were poorly understood she told ....
- but the Germans whom I thought were not champions of humour actually had some good ones.
In Hamburg-Altona (Altona was Danish at some point) for example I met this one on a foot path along the Elbe:
Vernünftige fahren hier nicht med dem Rad.
Anderen ist es verboten.

Sensible people don't ride bike here
For everybody else it is forbidden.

So I revised my view biggrin

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

Today I stumbled over this one:

It was surprising to me because it exceeded
what I regard as our tendency to be modest and humble;
we have our Jantelov - Law of Jante - which you may have heard about, Fossaw.
It was very refreshing.
Hey, we can brag!
biggrin
And the Germans can fly their flag again after winning the European Football Championship in 1996!

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

Little Mermaid,

---------
It is certain that having an animal represents certain constraints. Personally, I do not mind having to walk Louloup, or not being able to keep him (even with friends he loves, he escapes to find me). Compared to what it brings me, I even think it's 'cheap to pay'.

The only thing that is a pity, and that I had not thought of when I got it back: That I could not go back to Chile as long as he was alive. There are about forty days in this country, and they are really very strict at the customs (you can not even get a piece of bread). To leave him in a kennel for so long is simply unthinkable for me.

blushing

flodisar,

Bienvenu au Base Camp ! C'est vrai que c'est un concept très sympa. J'espère que quand tu auras plus de temps, tu nous feras visiter un peu ton pays.
----------
Welcome to Base Camp! It is true that it is a very nice concept. I hope that when you have more time, you will make us visit your country a little.

wink

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

Too bad that the restrictions are so serious for going to Chile with Louloup ... sad
stefada, I'm fully aware of what a pet can do for you ....
I hope you can understand my arguments as well.
Once again I was lucky to get up from the pit I was sliding down into before it was too late
so today, I don't feel that void any more - and the hospital priest offered me a discussion if I needed it
which is good to know, because she was a sensible person
I have all of you - or that's how I feel it

Seems as if this is a stumble-over-things-day:
