Re: "The survivors"

nasher,
The first 5 years is a difficult time.
Wishing you well.

Are you ready for the HCC GPU Beta testing and project?
They already ran some Beta tests and I missed out.
Today I installed a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 graphics card in my i7.
It installed without a problem.
The new card worked when I booted up and the onboard graphics no longer work.
Installed the new drivers and updates.
Did not remove or disable the onboard graphics drivers.
(If it ain't broke don't fix it.)
Now all I need is a GPU Beta to verify it is functioning correctly.
Looking forward to HCC GPU.

Re: "The survivors"

While the i7 case was open to install the GPU I thought it would be a good time to do some additional cooling work.
Previously I purchased a North Bridge cooler for the z68 chip and an additional case fan.
The Noctua cooler is so big that adding an additional fan in the top of the case is not possible.
There is plenty of room for the fan but it does not clear the Noctua during installation..
Also, it prevents me from adding the second Noctua fan as it is so close to the existing fan that the clip can't be installed.
There is no clearance anywhere near the Noctua.
The GPU just fits next to it (close as in a human hair close).
To complete the fan installations the Noctua is going to have to be removed and the fan clips modified.
Sounds like a good rainy day project.

Re: GPU Crunching
grumpygrampy and I learned this the hard way.

For Windows 7:
If you downloaded BOINC from the WCG website you are running the 32-bit version.
If you downloaded BOINC from the BOINC website you are running the 64-bit version.
You need the 64-bit version of BOINC to do GPU computing.
If you have the 32-bit version and want to go to 64-bit version you must uninstall the 32-bit version via the Control Panel.
But before that click on the No New Tasks button in the BOINC Manager and allow the work in the queue to finish.
Caution: Installing the 64-bit version will NOT remove the 32-bit version, you will have both programs installed. Whowouldofthunkit?
After the 32-bit version is removed install the 64-bit version and check your settings, and verify Allow New Tasks.
You should be good and BOINC will resume downloading and processing CPU work.

On Windows 7 if you installed BOINC as a service (Protected Application) it cannot access the GPU (on Linux it can be installed as a service and work).

If you use Remote Desk Top to access a PC that is crunching GPU work it will stop GPU processing.
You may use UltraVNC (or a few others) as it does not impact GPU processing.

One last thing, your graphics card has to be expensive and on the approved list of ATI or NVIDIA cards.

I hope this helps.
I am looking forward to GPU crunching.

Re: "The survivors"

Grumpy,
You got that right. Its a chore just to keep my pencil point sharp and my eraser large enough.

Besides that "One last thing" kinda leaves me out, the expensive and on the approved list.

Keep the abacus well oiled.

Re: "The survivors"

There is a new 64-bit version of BOINC available.
Guess who will not be the first to install it?
I read the release notes for version 7, there are issues with rolling back to version 6.
If you are fearless have at it but read the release notes before taking the leap.
Myself, I am going to wait for the smoke to clear.

Re: "The survivors"

Burno,
You need to look into a uni Kuru Toga pencil.
It auto rotates the lead so you don't get those dreadful flat spots.
And might I recommend an E-Knock eraser?
It is refillable.

Re: "The survivors"

I can't leave well enough alone.
I have a Dell P4 and have decided to load version 7 on that one PC.
Prior to loading I am creating an image of "C" so that going back to version 6 will be easy.
There is nothing on that PC that can't be replaced.
If I lose one days work on that PC it will not have a big impact overall.
