Re: "The survivors"

gretchch,
Know what you mean about the difficulty in getting badges when you have to buy and maintain the equipment yourself.
I know an exec at a company with 16,000 employees I would dearly like to recruit as a sponsor.
Not likely to happen.

It is raining Betas, I picked up some too.

Re: "The survivors"

Thanks, I hope to have elevated three badges to Sapphire by summer.
I used to crunch on United Devices but switched to WCG when they closed shop.
When I joined WCG in 2007 it was more difficult to get a Bronze badge as we didn't have multi-core processors.
Now I can do in 1 day what it took 17 days to accomplish.
Isn't technology great?

Re: "The survivors"

Technology IS great... Unfortunately, I have had to give up some of my cores today, because I was running WCG on a rather elderly machine at work, only long enough to get my sapphire badges for the three projects that are winding down. I've run its 8 cores hot for 9 weeks, but now they need to rest so I don't end up having to explain why I need to get replacement processors biggrin

Re: "The survivors"

How hot were the cores?
Reason for asking is that I have read about CPU temps a lot and don't think it is as important as some believe.
Starting with the Pentium 4 Intel built an overtemp feature into the chip and it will shut down before the core is damaged.
One of my AMD quad cores shut down when the cooler failed due to a broken CPU bracket.
Right now my i7 is running near 60 degrees centigrade at 4.3 GHz.
I plan to push that processor higher in the near future.
Will monitor the temps of the cores but am not worried if they get into the upper 60s and low 70s centigrade.

Re: "The survivors"

Making the problem worse is that the air conditioning in the server room where this machine resides is only keeping the room at about 78 degrees (in the winter time). Once the outside temperature warms up, we have trouble keeping the room cool when all of the machines are left running (and mostly idle), let alone running at full capacity.

I am thinking about maybe upgrading my 3-year-old AMD quad core & motherboard at home with a new i7 and Intel motherboard later this year, so my production may pick back up a bit then (although I may have to shut it down during the day in the summertime to save on air conditioning costs) biggrin

Re: "The survivors"

My experience with the i7 is that it is a great CPU.
My mobo has the Z68 chipset and software to overclock it without touching BIOS.
The CPU is rated 3.5 GHz out of the box and with one click went to 4.3 and has been rock solid since.
grumpygrampy has an i7 and he has done well with it.
You have to consider that one overclocked i7 will do more than two quad cores, and uses only one power supply.
My i7 uses about 155-160 watts total including all 5 fans.
That is running WCG at 100% CPU usage.
As my older PCs are replaced they will definitely be Intel.

Re: "The survivors"

I have the I7-860, which is a generation older now that sandy bridge came out.
I don't overclock because i just can't type that fast.
Pulling about 108 watts running at 60%, (i know, i'm too conservative)
