bicotz

The odd one out from your list, was it by any chance a re-send (suffix 2 or greater) ?

HSTB used to send out their re-sends whenever they arose rather than the strict times that new units were sent out.

Re: Work Avaiable

Work is regularly loaded throughout the day for this project, as is with other projects, however due to storage requirements for this project the total daily number of tasks is much less than typical projects. Please see the following post for more details: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewpostinthread?post=615973

Thanks,
armstrdj

But if you are only going to release about 1700 workunits per day WHY did you come here to WCG to do this project? According to BoincStats there are 42,052 Active Users and 169,409 Active hosts so the chance of getting a workunit is slim and none at the best of times!! This is alot like trying get badges for TB also, what's the point of even trying? Sure about 1700 pc's per day get a workunit, but what about the other over forty thousand of them? Wouldn't it just be better to build up a stash of them and then release enough for LOTS of people to get into helping you solve this problem? At this rate, I have 17 pc's and have gotten ONE workunit for the Africa Rainfall Project, I have almost given up even trying!! I do have a couple of p's still asking but even they will be stopped if they don't get some soon, there's no point in wasting the time asking if you aren't going to send any workunits anyway. And before you say 'try another project' I have two accounts here and am already at the 15 year mark for every badge except TB, Beta and Africa Rainfall!!

Re: Work Avaiable

I'm sure they came here to take advantage of users interested in donating their time to help with these projects. People have different goals - some may have loved ones with cancer/AIDS/TB or another problem the researchers are working on. There are many opportunities for donations - pick a cause that you care about!

To Mikey and all of us badge hunters.

Don't miss the point!
Although many of us enjoy hunting WUs when a new project comes alive, this is NOT the purpose of WCG.
The main objective is to provide free computing power to scientists who cannot afford buying time in supercomputers for projects which need years of computing.

And as long as there are many more volunteers hunting these WUs than the lab and WCG are able to provide this objective is largely reached. Not forgetting the thousands of other volunteers ready to crunch these WUs if ever badge hunters give up. smile

Re: Work Available

Woohoo! After almost a week of no ARP WUs, I got 2 today -- by requesting them at :38 past the hour. I tried doing that many times this week, with zero success. Maybe many of the big crunchers have more than they can handle.

Re: Work Available

An automated waiting list, where you could put in a request for work, and watch it move up the list as these coveted, limited-supply WUs are drip-fed to volunteers, would seem a fairer way of distributing work. Not saying you need to limit the WUs per volunteer, just let us see that our machines will eventually receive at least some WUs.
But as it involves extra work to set it up, seems pretty unlikely it will ever be enacted.

Mikey159c:
I have over 70 threads running and I have only gotten 6 so far, but I am not really hunting them either. This project will probably take a few years, so I am not too worried about getting a badge in the first month. Try to think about this as a shakedown cruise. When you first try something new, you don't put the pedal to the metal right out of the gate, but you try out the new item more slowly to see if there are any problems you did not anticipate so you can correct them in a timely manner. And if you read Uplinger's post about the possible storage requirements for this project, you will realize they are still in the shakedown phase.
Cheers

Re: Work Available

It takes less than five minutes to set up a cron job or Scheduled Task. Some people here are spending much longer than five minutes complaining when they could simply "set it and forget it." A little bit of effort goes a long way. Stop whining about "fair share" and accept personal responsibility to get tasks based on five minutes of simple merit.

Re: Work Available

The non-technical strategy is simply to fill up one's buffer with other work units, then deselect those projects leaving only ARP1 project. Then your device's BOINC scheduler will request work automatically every hour as well as when each completed work unit uploads.

I've had success simply filling up a buffer with MIP1 work units, then as each one reports, it asks for ARP1 work. Every day or two the machine gets enough to stay busy.

Of course, since it takes less than five minutes to automate this with crontab or Scheduled Task, that's a better strategy than relying on luck.

Re: Work Available

Other things to keep in mind:

1) It's possible that ARP1 WU supply will increase over time as some of the storage and data bottlenecks are ironed out. The project has only been live for 10-12 days! Have some patience.

2) There are still two other very worthy climate modeling projects in the pipeline. If/when they launch, we'll have three climate modeling projects active on top of the other worthy medical projects.
