Re: Work Available

Seems like another project where the badge hunters slurp up any WUs and no one else can contribute.

Guess I will continue to do MIP/MCM.

This is an incredibly defeatist attitude. One doesn't need to be a "badge hunter" to get work units. If you want work units, either automate it or use the lazy method and fill up a buffer with other projects (I use MIP1), then the machine will ask several times per hour and will get ARP1 work units. I promise that success will come with very little effort. Don't ever give up!

For the machines I automate, I only request once per hour, so it's no different than without automation.

Re: Work Available

To all implementing a scheduled task (Task Scheduler or cron)
Please use discretion and keep the interval to something reasonable, every update call is added work on the servers.

Right now I'm requesting an update every 10 minutes and keeping the 2 CPUs I've dedicated to the project busy almost all the time. Once I get my Bronze badge (tonight) I'll change it to once every 30 minutes.

If I'm not getting climate related tasks here maybe I'll get something over at CPDN.

EDIT: Manually I've picked up 4 more playing the 8 game. After several tries wink

There's 2 approaches... request reason from WCG, or en mass participate in this cron scheduling bombarding scheme. Who knows the system goes on it's back and then action is taken to distribute work in a fashion of spreading the limited work (1700 a day) and at the same time speed up the science. Anything that's get buffered beyond cores, waiting on the previous task to finish is ready to start per stats 29 hours.

Run Time Per Result (y:d:h:m:s) 0:001:05:08:31

So far standard deaf ears.

Re: Work Available

That's a good, in depth tutorial on making scheduled tasks. It's actually much simpler if you use the GUI. Just save the " boinccmd.exe --project http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ update" (of course, not including quotes) as a text file and change the .txt extension to .bat to make it executable. Then use the task scheduler GUI (Control Panel\System and Security\Administrative Tools) to add a new task triggered at the desired time to run that bat file.

After some tweeking I was able to set up two repeating actions for X:08 and x:38.. I checked the BOINC event log for confirmation that they both ran. Since my lap top is crunching 8 WU with 2 waiting I did not expect anything. Will be helpful in future. MANY THANKS...

Currently, CPDN is giving out only Linux work units. On my slow (1.8 GHz) Xeon processors, there are two types of work units. One takes me about two weeks to do one, and the other takes about three weeks.

I believe their web site will be down for several days for maintenance.

The CPDN project will be going offline today from 16:30 (UK time) onwards this is to perform project maintainence. This downtime is expected to last until Thursday (14th November). If the work is completed prior to this day the project will be restored ahead of schedule.

So far standard deaf ears.

Both armstrdj and uplinger have commented that there are storage bottlenecks as well as data location confirmation issues with the research team that need to be checked before supply can increase.

Now I'm far from a WCG apologist as I have my own short list of frustrations, but I think some basic understanding can be extended to the tech team and research team this early of a major project launch. Why the unnecessary drama instead of simply being patient for 1) the storage bottlenecks to improve and 2) patience with the research team?

It makes much more sense to start slow and ramp up once the researchers look at the data and go "Good, this is exactly what we're looking for. Feel free to proceed." We're still on the _000 generation, so perhaps some patience is warranted as everyone makes sure all work returned is copacetic prior to going full speed.

-------------------------
Now on a second note, I'm still patiently waiting for an explanation of your reasoning for this:

Monster queue? Doubtful. I can’t get anywhere near 1 per core.

It's because there were a few larger crunchers who were quick to figure out the minute and second the batches are released for distribution, the same ways as it happened with HSTB and set up scheduled updates. It's Trump's world. Got 4 validated with a return time of runtime plus/minus 1 hour, and still they sat in PV jail another 36 hours. It's not helping science at all as the returned result is base of the next step, so it sitting there 3 days means 181 generations will at least take 1.5 years to complete. Suppose the 7 day standard deadline sort of signals it OK with Delft University and that other IBM company that will own the data.

I'm confused what this sentence has to do with the rest of your post. Is DJT somehow to blame for people not getting ARP1 work units? If so, now I have seen it all. tongue

I don't know if you are deliberately ducking me or not, but I'm holding you responsible for your words. Please help me understand what on earth DJT has to do with the ARP1 project and its short supply. My initial suspicion was what @nanoprobe said (unhinged TDS), but I'm politely giving you the benefit of the doubt just as I would expect others to give me the benefit of the doubt if I said something so unhinged since there hopefully is a more rational explanation.

Either way, please explain what you meant some random public figure has to do with work unit availability. I say this as someone who speaks zero political things on the WCG forum. Thank you.

Re: Work Available

Sgt. Joe, this isMikey159C using my other account today, and I have over 100 cpu cores and have gotten a grand total of one workunit, that's the point I was trying to make, it's not to get a 10 year badge tomorrow it's to crunch this new project on something, one a week is okay for me but ZERO is why I posted. I will try the chron thing later on as I have mostly windows machines but I much prefer the 'reserve a unit list' that someone else posted about instead, in fact several Boinc projects could use that.

I sympathize with you on getting close to zero with 100 cores running. I understand your point as I feel I have been lucky to get the 6 I have. It been a couple of days with none, but I would think with that many cores you would luck into a few more. Just bad luck maybe. Good luck on your hunt.
Cheers
