Re: Work Available

they just announced they would be down for about 2 months to move WCG. so add 2 months to the end time.

I'm hoping to make my 1 year badge before they start the move, but it is going to be close.

Re: Work Available

Kevin

How about allowing those 3 new ultras out to play for a bit longer than the rest?

I would really like to and I thought about doing it, but the important thing right now is getting everything into a known stable state and minimize anything that would make the behavior of the system unexpected. Anything we do that is an "exception" adds complexity and creates the opportunity for unexpected behavior. As a result, I cannot justify doing that.

Re: Work Available

Kevin,

Would it be a correct assumption that when the system starts backup in April all hosts will be considered unreliable?

The stats that determine if a host is reliable is number of consecutive valid and average turnaround time. Both of these are only updated when a device returns a result. As a result, these won't change for your host during the outage and reliable hosts will remain reliable hosts.

We are working on setting things up so that clients will just be told to check back in 24 hours. That means that people can just stay connected (or contribute to other BOINC projects) and stay attached to WCG. When it is back online, then they will get work and resume normal contribution as the same host and thus if they were previously reliable, they should still be reliable.

If some does detach and then re-attach when WCG is back, then it 'might' match the previous host record for that host and if it does, then the host will still be considered reliable.

As a result, the pool of reliable hosts might be modestly smaller for a week or two but hopefully nothing that will need action.

Re: Work Available

Downloads are in short supply. I suspect that some crunchers have increased their queues to allow for the shutdown.

Re: Work Available

I was operating on a no queue basis until the shutdown announcement. I think it makes sense to increase the queue due to this event. Not the best for the project itself, but it is a short term issue.

Wow... what a time to do a challenge on WCG... um.
