Re: Work Available

Mike,

I rarely get "Extreme" tasks so I thought I'd celebrate the progress of this one... :-)

ARP1_0034028_105 (triplet) turned up this afternoon; my copy should go back at about 02:00 UTC on the 12th. I think that's 10 generations in about 12 days, given entity's prior report -- not too shoddy!...

Cheers - Al.

Re: Work Available

Interesting I have a feeling downloads will be closed off before the end of the challenge. Since the challenge ends on the 14th at 23:59

Mike Gibson said
Downloads are in short supply. I suspect that some crunchers have increased their queues to allow for the shutdown.

This is potentially a good problem to have as lots of work will get done before the shutdown, potential side-effects could be if people cannot return work within the time period allowed for returning work

The oldest task I am currently working on is ARP1_0023715_123_2

It means they will be worked further into the 14 days after downloads cease. It also means those will not be able to be moved on a generation before the shurdown. And some people will not get enough to run as there are only 35609 in circulation at any one time.

Re: Work Available

The last 4 units that I have downloaded have all had a deadline of exactly 6 days in both BOINC Manager and on the results page instead of 7+1.

Yup! And I've got some _124 and _125 tasks (not retries) that have exactly 3 days (and no grace day there either!). Retries still seem to be 3.5 days at present (but have lost the grace day too.)

I suspect someone at WCG is as fed up as I am with all the machines that come up No Reply or Error (Not Started by Deadline) and has decided to make things fail out earlier (and yes, I'm seeing machines failing to return priority jobs too (though I suspect the occasional 32-bit tasks don't help there...))

I wonder if we'll go back to 7+1 on resumption or not? I vote for "Not" :-)

Cheers - Al.

[Edit to add stuff about retries...]

Re: Work Available

I think they've shortened the deadline to discourage hoarders for this ramp down before shutdown.

Re: Work Available

These accelerated work units (such as Umlauf's, above) now seem to be getting 1.5 days (and no grace day).

I've just got another one, ARP1_0034172_102_0...

Cheers - Al.

ARP1_0026754_124

Originally went out with 2 copies on 2/7, running 32 bit, one replied after 60.49 CPU, the other didn't reply. 2/11 18:03, 2 more copies sent out to replace the one that did not reply so it is now a triplet.

ARP1_0002219_132

Originally went out as 2 copies, I got a third copy at 2/12 01:52, then the second one reported results at 12/12 08:39. I am still running that one.

ARP1_0010389_124

Originally went out as 2 copies, one pending the other no reply. 2/12 15:43, 2 more went out to replace the one that didn't reply, so it is now a triplet.

Re: Work Available

Thank you, folks.

Before the announcement of the shutdown, the normal deadline was 7 days on BOINC Manager and an extra day on the results page. The accelerated were 3.5 + 1 and extremes 1.75 + 1, so 50% & 25% plus a day.

The normal has now been reduced to a straight 6 days, 3 days for accelerated & 1.5 days for extremes (again 50% & 25%).

This should reduce the queues of some of the hoarders and enable more units to be available and get through more before the shutdown.

WCG seem to be replacing 'No Reply's' with 2 to make sure those units validate before the transfer to Toronto.
