Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

It always amuses me, when someone says "new and improved" - as it can't be both, its GOT to be one or the other. If it's 'new', it can't have been in existence before, and likewise, if it's 'improved', then it can't be new (i.e., something's got to have existed before). BUT, I know what you mean biggrin

let me clarify:

something can be improved as part of the revision process, and be an improved product launched as part of a new revision release.

we can call that a Minor Model Change.

Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

Thanks, Cyclops, for a well-written very informative update.

I'm sure other crunchers would join me in wishing that you'd been able to find time to post little updates more frequently throughout the downtime, even if there wasn't much progress to report. I think a lot of crunchers would have left WCG during this time due to frustration, and such updates may have kept them here. Time will tell, I guess.

I hope there are no or only very few hiccups in "restor(ing) the parallel filesystem that supports the workunit management stack" and look forward to you getting WCG processing work units again.

I agree with this. I appreciate this update and the previous hardware one last week but more regular information about where we are (aren't?) would help keep volunteers on side.

Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

When will upload/download of workunits be restarted?

From Cyclops above:

The BOINC database is now up and running, joining the website/forums database which has been up since last week. However, upload/download of workunits is paused until we restore the parallel filesystem that supports the workunit management stack, to the state it was in at the time of the hardware failure. Deadlines have been extended and valid results computed during this pause will be credited when we resume.

Based on past performance their estimates aren't very accurate.

Thanks, Jake402. I read Cyclops' useful update. However, it did not answer my specific question. While nice to know about the intermediate steps, I suspect most people care most about when we can start contributing to the science. We're at about day 20 on this "recovery."

I'm afraid your "specific question" does not have a specific answer.

Clearly, no-one yet knows when the restart will begin.

Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

Thing is Freewill, as we ARE so far down the road after this issue occurred, EVERYONE will have WU's to return - and thus, the last thing we want, is for the huge surge of uploading (and then, subsequent downloading of) WU's to go and break something...

Yes, it's a 'pain', not being able to crunch WU/s and thus, provide the various projects with data to utilsie - but, in the grand scheme of things, it's not as though it's a financial system that's down, where you can't get access to your money biggrin
