cool Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

There is no need to hit any retry button... sad

It's therapeutic - I hammer a few of mine from time to time. devilish

As for the requests to have a locked thread with progress due to this one being full of other posts - you might as well ask for a green light indicator with a number of days to go next to it.

Not gonna happen, not gonna provide useful information.

It'll be done when it's done cool living in Africa teaches you that.

Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

So, it's now even later in the week, and it would be nice to get some update about whether or not the "later this week" restart of BOINC, is still on the table.

Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

Thank you for your patience.

Unfortunately - the recovery ran into additional HDD failures. With the help of the data center we had to rebuild the drive onto a hot spare. This is now complete and the transfer of /science is about to resume. We managed to get 20 out of 36TB moved to the new storage already.

In the meantime, we reworked the back-end that was causing some devices not being recognized.

thank you
igor

Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

Thanks for the update Igor. Let's hope no more issues turns up before BOINC can be restarted.

It's really not a question about patience anymore, it's rather a question about how many of us (including you and your team) will become (psych) patients, before this is all over biggrin biggrin

Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

Igor

It is now Thursday afternoon, How about a little bit of speculation like 'we hope to start uploading the completed work after the weekend' and 'we hope to have work available to download the following week'?

Please insert your own estimates. Not having any idea is causing comments and speculation.

Mike

Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

There are many more frustrating aspects I do not need to share with you all.

Hopefully the remaining data transfer will continue without additional failure.

We are exploring the possibility to restart downloading processed WUs, while not sending new WUs out. Once we are certain it will not create some unforeseen feedback loop, triggering other errors - we will notify you and start the process.
if all goes without additional hickups - we may be able to restart fully by Monday.

thank you
igor

Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

A little bit of speculation would be Monday IMHO. Likely verification of downloads to finish system restoration, etc. (other details needed to ensure a good restart).

Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

Glad to hear you fell back to F@H while WCG gets restarted; some people are so angry they're giving up on WCG entirely (or say they are). I wish I could afford the high-end commercial hardware, the hot female staff to maintain it, and the evil-lair mansion to keep it in (and them in), but.... [: biggrin

And yes, the newest computer does excellently with WCG, and does very well with FAH. Finishing an 18 hour job as I type, then I give it a couple of hour break before grabbing the next FAH job. But I will return to WCG; I can run 4-5 WCG jobs at a time, giving me more than 50 run in 24 hours, without running my computer at 'maximum theoretical power'. I also limited FAH to 6 out of 8 cores for the same reason.

Thank you for the update. I f there are things you do not wish to share, that is your prerogative. However, there are some of us who enjoy hearing all the nitty gritty details.
Cheers
